D - Short for Denarius (old roman), penny (English), and sometimes for dollar (American)
D - Recognition letter of the Denver (USA) mint, For Danzig, Düsseldorf and München (Munich) in Germany. Graz and Salzburg in Austria, and for Lyon in France, in Durango for Mexico, and in the past for gold coins from Dalhonega (USA).
Dala - name for the coins from Hawaii, the Kalakaua dollar.
Dalasi - Currency of Gambia, split into 100 butut.
Dak - Nepalese name for the coins of 2 paisa = 1/16th mohar copper, from 1966 on it's in aluminium.
Dareik- or Dareikos - this is the name of the golden coin used in the kings dynasty of the Achaimeniden who have ruled in Persia, This coin was minted from the government of king Darius I, 521-486 BC. This golden coin had a weight of 8,42 to 8,35 grams with about 3 % silver.
David's guilder - a gold guilder from the Utrecht diocese David van Bourgondië (1455-1496) The Netherlands.
Decime - French bronze coin with the falue of 10 centimes, first issued in 1796, last in 1815.
Decimo - known name for the 10 centavos pieces of several different countries in middle and South America.

Denarius - the most important coin from the roman republic, and the Roman Empire. It had the same value as 10 as.
Denga - Russian silver coin from the 14th century with the weight of 0,93 gram after the 17th century the name of the copper coin with the value of a half kopek.
Denier - a silver coin that is from origin a follow up from the Denarius, also the British penny is a direct relative from it. During the coin reform of Karel de Grote (Karel the Great) (768-814) where from a Paris mark (244,75 grams) 240 deniers hammered.

Didrachme - Stater, a Greek coin of silver worth 2 drachmes of about 8,5 grams, in several Greek monetary systems it's the leading base unit. Also in the roman coin unit at the time of the roman republic the period 269-205 BC this type is known.
Diobool - Greek coin with the value of 2 obolen = 1/3 drachme and a weight of about 1,4 grams.
Dime - coin of 10 cents in the USA, first minted in 1796, until 1965 from 900/1000 silver, later cupro-nickel.
Dinar - golden coin from Arabic origin, in weight about 4,25 grams, equal as the Byzantium Solidus. Also coin from Serbia from 1868-1918, later also currency in Yugoslavia.
Dinero - Spanish name for the denier or token, a silver coin for the first issued under Ferdinand III (1230-1253) In Peru the name for a 10 centavos coin, minted from 1863 till 1916, between 1863 till 1917 there where also half dinero's made.
Dionysus - see Bacchus.
Dioscuren - the sons of Zeus and Leda, called Castor and Polydenkes (Pollux). They often show on Greek and roman coins. Castor on horseback, Pollux as a fist fighter.
Dirhem - silver Arabic coin from Persian origin. First issues are from 693-696, according the strict Islamic rules, there is only text on the coins, and no pictures. Also currency in Morocco and Qatar & Dubai.
Divus - Means literally, the god likeness. Text on roman coins from the emperors, for empresses it's DIVA F(ilius).
Do - comes from Mexican coins, and stands for the mint house of Durango.
D.O.C. - Initials for the Danish East Indian Company, the letters stand in a monogram on the silver and copper coins of the former Danish belongings in Tranquebar in India.
Dokdo - Copper coin from the Indian state Nawanager. First issued in the 16th century, last emission was under Jaswani (1894-1907).
Dollar - Currency in the USA, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda's, Brunei, Canada, Ethiopia, Fiji Islands, Guyana, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Taiwan and Trinidad & Tobago.
Dong - Smallest currency in Annam, now known as Vietnam. Looks a little like the Chinese cash coins, in several different metals struck.
Double Eagle - Common name for the American 20 dollar piece from 1850-1833.
Double Tournois - small French copper coin issued sinds 1577. Next to the types from the official governments, also minted under authority of local feudal rulers.
Double - Copper coin from Guernsey from 1830-1966. Issued in types of 1, 2, 4 & 8 doubles. 1 English penny was 8 doubles.
Doudon - Copper coin from the French part of India, issued in the 18th century, and last minted in 1836.
Douzain - billion coin from France, issued during the time of Francois I (1515-1547) 1 Douzain = 12 deniers Tournois.
Drachme - Greek coin from the old days, but in use until the euro came, and forced it away.
Dreiling - Smallest currency from several different north German cities like Hamburg and Lübeck.
Driegulden - three guilder - Dutch currency, first issued in 1680 in the province of Holland, later also for the V.O.C. minted, the last type is made until 1832.
Dubbeltje - Duppie - popular name for the Dutch 10 cent piece.
Dubloen - Dubloon - double golden Escudo from Spain, first issued under Karel V in 1537, the weight is 6,75 grams of 875/1000 and it was minted until 1772.
Ducatone - Golden coin minted in Naples, Italy, during the regency of the house of Arragon, on the name of Alfonso I (1442-1458).
Duetto - copper coin from Toscana with the value of 2 quattrini. First issued in the 16th century until 1785.
Duit - since the 14th century in the Dutch provinces used coin, first in silver, later in copper, also used for the V.O.C. but then with the monogram of the company on it.
Ducat - Ducaat - a golden coin who was spread all over Europe in several different issues. Still minted in some countries as collectors item, and for the gold value. There are also silver ducats in circulation, first issued in 1659.
Ducaton - also known as Zilveren rijder (silver rider) first issue under Albert and Isabella.
Duplone - A golden Swiss coin of 16 Franken, minted during the Helvetian republic.
Dupondius - a roman coin with the value of 2 as. A yellow copper coin, that was very hard to distinguish from the as, who was from red copper, and about the same size and weight. The coin was struck from 23 BC until 260 AC.
Duro - a silver piece of 8 realen, minted during the time of Phillips II (1556-1598) of Spain, later there was also a 5 pesetas piece called Duro.
Dutgen - Düttchen - 3 groschen piece from Poland, minted during the regency of Sigismund I first minted in 1528. At Brandenburg a billion coin with the value of 34 pfennig.
