I have been using an AGFA Film Lupe (below images) to photograph my coins for years, and have gotten pretty good results with outside light. However, the film Lupe that I have is too small for anything larger than nickels (quarters and up I have to "free-hand" it, and I am getting kinda shaky in my age).

Does anyone know if there is a larger field (diameter) of view Film Lupe available for my larger coins?

Or is there a base/collar that I could put it on to elevate it a skosh (smidgen) and maintain it's stability?

The problem is the high magnification more than the small size. There are some decent looking lower-mag stand magnifiers that even have built-in lights that MIGHT be what you are looking for. Something like this one:

Or this one without lights:

These might be able to image an entire dollar, but you will have to experiment...

Thanks rmpsrpms, I will have to look into this one when I get to the house...eBay is a no-no at work.

Do you happen to have the part number? I could google it (images).

No part number (Chinese product) but here is the picture of it:

Of course when they say "4X" it might actually be 2X and won't magnify the coin enough. You'll need to do some searching to see what is best but something like this, especially with the built-in lighting, may work well for your purposes.

I am afraid that the above product would not work...I place my digital camera (Digimax Cyber 530) directly on the AGFA lupe for stability and take the pictures like the Jefferson above. I may need some sort of Plexiglas base to raise the lupe up a bit to get a larger field of view, or a lower magnification/ larger diameter lupe.

Thanks anyway!

OK, makes sense. I looked up 4X photography lupes and there are some available like this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canon-4x-Ma...em5ae110baa0

and this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SILVESTRI-4...em4a9bf6b599

but they are VERY expensive. I've seen Bausch & Lomb stand magnifiers, with a small tripod stand, that might work. Sometimes they go cheap but would give you the stability you're looking for as well as large field of view and adjustable focus distance from coin to lens (they screw in and out).

Do Google image search for "Bausch and Lomb tripod magnifier" and you'll see what I'm talking about...Ray

Yep, I have one of those adjustable height tripod magnifiers as well (probably not B&L)...somewhere, thanks for the reminder!
