It is. Seems like after a welcome break in 2011,the Mint will be issuing "special" circulation quarters again next year. The caribou will be taking a break while other Canadian animals fill in.Wood bison, orca, and peregrine falcon will each appear for a month,I suspect that others,as yet unannounced will follow.

If the RCM can produce, say 4 million of each type, I think it is fair to say that nominal collectors will take say 1 million out of circulation at face value. Most of that ends up being profit for the Canadian Government. This is why Mints the World over produce special coins for circulation. Even I am guilty of building a type set of coins from circulation, and I do NOT collect NCLT. My normal collecting interests lie far away from this area.

sel_691 - I was just roaming and saw your post. Made me smile :-) I am in Australia and the mints here churn them out like crazy.

Yeah, same problem here in America..
Starting in 1999, at least 21, to possibly 31 years of 5 quarters each was required by law.. Fun at first; it's what got me interested in collecting in the first place, but annoying now and obviously just for profit.
And don't get me started on those 5-ounce silver hunks with matching designs of the parks quarters...right down to the same denomination -_-

Hmmm, thats interesting, coins of a "special " nature have a habit of disappearing from the main stream very quickly it seems. Methinks it may be a good idea to check these out when they arrive, be nice to see some errors amongst them..

Since everybody and their dogs saves these special coins, perhaps the more valuable ones in the future will be with a VG grade ( ones that actually circulate) as opposed to all the MS coins that everyone has. Like the colorized Olympic quarters, I have never seen one in circulation

I would imagine that The Charlton Catalogue will soon need a special section, or an entire edition, for all the circulation commemorative quarters released. I know there have been other denomination circulation commemoratives, but nowhere near the number of quarters. I have been putting all the nice shiny commemorative quarters I get into a jar. But, as this just goes on and on, I will probably eventually just roll and bank them. I still keep a decent set of all of them, but just one set... and I don't even know why, other than that I can. >>> edit >>> From the RCM site ( italics et al added by me). The commemorative circulation coins unveiled by Canadian government officials and representatives of Parks Canada and the Mint, at a public ceremony hosted at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec include: the 2011 Parks Canada Centennial one-dollar circulation coin; the 2011 Boreal Forest two-dollar circulation coin; and three new 25-cent circulation coins (half of which will be coloured) featuring the Orca, Peregrine Falcon and Wood Bison. The 2011 Parks Canada Centennial one-dollar coin will begin circulating in the coming weeks, followed by the remaining 2011 commemorative circulation coins later this year, and in early 2012.

Ah, I thought there would be a bunch of commemoratives starting in 2012. Hopefully they won't be too difficult to get.

Plus it's the Queen's diamond jubilee next year. You can be sure they mint some sort of commemorative coin for that, they are already offering silver and gold coins for shipping in October.

I mostly only collect what I find in change (and a little roll hunting), so as a new collector (this is my first year), I actually look forward to finding these in my change next year.
Timnic44: I have found 2 of the 3 Colorized Olympic coins in change and the other when roll hunting...they are still out there

Eh-Pep keep up the enthusiasm, this is the good side of having some commemoratives in circulation I think it stimulates the interest in the hobby and that is a good thing. The most fun I have had collecting was finding one I needed to fill a spot in a collection. That was from circulation, now with a more advanced collection those spots are heavy $$ to fill in.It's definitely more fun when you add to your collection for face. My quarter collection is complete all years most major varieties,240 pieces including 25 ncl pieces. Have fun!
