When I first started getting interested in coins was about the time the Presidential dollars came out. I have about the first 5 that I bought and put in air-tites. They still look ok, but the others that I had in flips or rolls look absolutely awful. In fact, they are just going to be spent. So, I agree that it probably isn't going to be the most popular set in 20 or 30 years, but the nice examples that people have bothered to put into capsules or slabs that are going to keep them in somewhat good shape might be worth hanging on to. They just tarnish and tone very easily, and it doesn't seem to be an attractive toning. I do like the Native American dollars, but might only get the proofs for those. I'd agree with the others and say get rid of what you don't like and make room for what you do. Seems pretty simple when it's not your collection.

I've always loved the golden dollar coin series as a whole, personally (as I've mentioned elsewhere, both collecting *and* re-circulating Presidentials and Sacagaweas) but the only things I do not like about the Sacagawea line is... well the portrait of Sacagawea herself, and the Peace Pipe reverse. Those two motifs simply do not fit my aesthetic and apparently every poll I've read is in agreement.
People love the Presidents, and the flying eagle (especially the "Cheerios" variety), corn planting and Haudenosaunee obverses but don't like the Wampanoag reverse and how the sculptor chose to represent the gal herself.
I'd love to see a series of $1 coins with the new 2012 Native American reverse *as* the obverse. That is a series I would collect.

I don't care for the Presidential dollars either, but I'm buying a roll of the D mint from the bank when they are released anyway. Hoarding money isn't a bad thing and since I started with them I thought I might as well finish the set. Since I've been at it for 5 years I'm halfway through as it will end in 2016. Hopefully the mint doesn't get any more ideas with commemorative coins. There's way too many with these and the ATB Quarters. Having to search out all these coins sometimes makes collecting a chore, not a pleasure. This especially when they don't make it easy for collectors to get them.

Yep, it's a p, d, s set. I did my best to get the best bell lines and toning I coul afford. It includes a pretty nice 55 bugs bunny. I really do love the set. I have a blank page I have added into my dansco for the proofs, once I finish the circulation set.
Thanks again for the help everyone. I'm going to go ahea and cash in/sell the presidents. Could keep them, I just don't really enjoy them. Will work on pics this weekend.

I figure if I live to be 150 years old, the Presidential dollars will just begin to become rare enough to have some value since so many people sock away rolls. Since I'm not planning to wait that long, I would say to collect Franklins. Collect what you like, especially those with intrinsic value as they will always be worth something. Gold dollars could eventually be worth much less than a present value dollar today, if you know what I mean.

So I wanted to give everyone a quick update this morning. I've started clearing out my collection. I will be using the circulated p and d dollar coins this morning to take my daughters to a local farm park. Money will go towards their picture with Santa and horse rides. Whatever is left will go towards our Xmas tree! I'm a happy guy.
The money I get from proof sets and my dansco will go towards completing my franklins next weekend at a local coin show.
Once the set is done I will make a point to share pictures.
Thank you to everyone for your help and suggestions!

I save a roll of the new Pres dollar coins because I can do it for face value. Maybe it will be worth more some day. If not, I can always spend it at face.

I'm a world collector but I do like to collect one example of each type of modern US coinage. As such I am trying to collect the Presidential series. Up to this point I have been able to find uncirculated examples anywhere from face to $1.50. Perfect. But for some reason, that I hope someone here can explain, the price of these has almost tripled. The mintage is huge, I hear lots of folks say they don't like them but there are hundreds of them on ebay (in their chopped up mint set states - and what is with that anyway?), all trying to sell for $3.95 plus shipping. I just want a nice example of each but that is not going to happen via ebay that is for sure. And I'm seeing the Sacagawea dollar doing the same thing. so my question is, if this series is not that desirable, why can't I find a set of the 5 for 2011 cheaply? And this is not a call to buy them. I would put that in the proper forum.

I was interested enough to get one roll each of the first three. But while I was at the bank the other day I bought a dozen from a guy changing them into the coin sorter. Now they are sitting on the table and I don't know what to do with them. I wish I would have bought a roll or two of the Lincoln dollar. Nobody likes these coins, they were made to spend not collect. They need to turn the dollar bill off one state at a time first and see how people react. Work with them and figure it out. I'd like to see two dollar bills and 1 dollar coins circulating.

Quote: Presidential dollar set will never have an end to a complete set! The President dollar set will end, most likely with either Gerald Ford or Ronald Reagan. POSSIBLY George H W Bush. Currently it is schedule to end with Ford, but if Carter dies before I think 2014 then it will extend through Reagan. Carter and Bush are both the same age so there is a chance that both Carter and Bush may die before 2014. If that happens it will run through Bush. It is unlikely that Clinton will die soon enough to qualify for his dollar. Quote: Nobody likes these coins, they were made to spend not collect. GOOD! That is what coins are for. Typically things which are MADE to be collectible as a general rule, wind up being just so much junk.

Who knows... maybe they will change the coin law before 2014 for the President dollar set to include Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, Carter and Bush 1 & 2; depends on how much profit $ US can make on these coins.

I am on the "if you don't enjoy it why collect it" bandwagon. If there is no passion for you, why collect them? I have had to re-evaluate what I was doing. I am collecting all JFKs and was doing so in part by buying an extra proof and mint set so that I could break them out. With the prices nowadays, I might as well depart from the price of the proof and mint sets and just buy the singles.
Now I have to agree with selling to buy the Franklins. I love those. Why? I don't know. But I have been assembling a set of proof 67 cameo+ set and can't get enough.
Get out of what you don't love and get back into what you do.
