It is a sad fact that B&M coin shops are a dying breed. Most "coin dealers" nowadays are bullion dealers who also happen to sell coins, hence the comment about dealers not knowing much about coins, i.e. they are not true Numismatists like the dealers of yesteryear. Anyone that is properly capitalized can set up a bullion shop but that doesn't mean they are going to know much about coins other than what they can glean from a RedBook or Krause catalog. |

The only way I could realistically see another 1913 appearing is if it was some sort of die trial or splasher that had been tucked away in some dusty forgotten family collection. But even the odds of that are absurdly minute, though I believe slighty better than a regular 1913 being discovered.

So true - but I think the coin side of the business will return when the hyperbole of silver/gold dies off again, whenever that is, there is always a cycle. My friend Tom Hallenbeck, President of the ANA, recently wrote a great blurb about how his father's coin shop in Colorado Springs was a mad house lately, all for bullion, the sales people were all lamenting how they didn't have time to do any "coin business" anymore, life was so much more hectic, none of the regulars in browsing through boxes of old coins and swapping stories and bragging (by the way, Hallenbeck Coin Gallery is a treat, if you're ever in Colorado Springs. There are also a lot of dealers who basically only know marketing and how to read the labels on slabs and the graysheet. They don't know coins in depth but they are good at sales and buying and selling. In some cases they will hire and have someone on staff that does know coins. I know coins but I have no interest in the nuances of ultra fine grading and I am not a salesman. So I stick to coins as a hobby, collecting and studying them. |

westcoin- yes, the Hallenbecks are definitely numismatic dealers in the old-school sense and conveniently enough, located a couple blocks from the ANA museum. Tom is the current ANA President while his father Ken is a former ANA President. My grandparents used to live in Manitou so my dad and I would go out there every summer and he would usually take me for a visit to the Hollenbeck's shop, they knew how to show a YN a good time  I have also made a number of purchases from them on ebay and I would highly recommend them(shameless plug for hallenbeckcoins  )

Listen I just posted about this and my post is gone. Just because I came to this site to ask questions about my coin dosent mean that I a new guy. just new to the form sites. not a professional just like to collect coins, and when my coin come back from being looked at. and if its a fake so what. I will still collect coins until I die. because I like to. and dont worry I will post after they get back to me. theres no shame in being wrong. its all about having fun. and doing what you like..............

Hallenbeck seems to just use the store for organization, and lists stuff in clumps. They haven't listed any coins since Oct 11.
