Sounds like the general consensus is to go slow. I spent a few hours last night looking at some of the grading posts, discussion of counterfeits & VAM discussions. It made me nervous enough to get out my scale this morning to weigh the unslabbed dollars, weights all look good. It looks like I need to figure out how to use the wife's digital camera, there are several coins I will need to get a second opinion on.

trdhrdr007,

Once you've made the decision as to what you want to get rid of, and you're still not sure as to how to go about selling the coins you want to get rid of, you might want to go to the "navigation window" in the left column, and click on "coin consignment". Bobby and Susan run this forum, and I'm sure they would be more than happy to assist you once you've made your choice as to which direction you want to go with your excess coins.
Just my Two Cents worth.

I don't know why I didn't look into that before. The fee seems reasonable when you consider the time it would take to list, answer emails & then ship. I'll definitely keep it in mind. Thanks.

New to the forum as a contributor. Old to colecting.

I recently had the same problem as you with a twist. I collect high grade/value 17th and 18th century stuff but started out collecting in my teens with my Dad, going through bank rolls etc. My Mom asked to sell Dad's collection. He'd already sold off most of the good stuff.

The rest was a boatload of used stuff. A lot of common date Morgans and early well-worn type type stuff. And a lot of type/proof sets from the mid sixties on. Also a lot of early worn Lincoln cents etc.

Bottom line: I told my Mom it was probably worth $4-6K.

After about a year I sold it for her (I would probably have paid her $5K to buy it (for remembrance) but thinking siblings thinking I was ripping off Mom made me not make the offer).

I ended up sending it all to Heritage to be auctioned off. Ended up making about $5500 for my Mom. It was alot of of work.

My experience with Heritage is if it is worth slabbing, slab and sell it there. If it's not, don't go to their Galleria to sell off your common stuff, bullion like stuff and common proof/mint sets. Find a dealer or another collector to buy it for less than published values (can you say "handling fee" when looking at dealer prices for common stuff, they've all got a ton).

I thought about ebay but the hassles for unslabbed large volumes was intimidating, more than it was worth.

If you're into the game of ebay, and just want the experience fo going through the process, it would probably be rewarding.

trdhrdr007,
You can also auction your stuff off here on this site. There is a buy/sell/trade/auction section on the forum if you scroll down a bit. If you have like rolls of indian head pennies, Mercury dimes, or half dollars, I believe the people here will give you a more than fair offer and you will be able to deal with some good folks without any fees being involved. I would appreciate it, anyways.
Welcome to the forum,
Ty

This is a valid point as long as you're not in a rush. You need a minimum of 50 posts with the forum to start buying and selling here. But it seems like you may be doing research for a little while so reaching 50 posts and contributing to the forum shouldn't be too hard.

My honest suggestions are ebay and/or contacting Bobby and Susan here for consignment. Both of these options have a pretty big "network" of coins collectors watching...

If I was getting up there in age, I think I would just set up a table at a flea market or antique show. You probably would get more for your money doing it that way, but it takes a lot of time finding the right people.

Let me say that I appreciate everyones opinion. I am not in a big hurry to move these coins, the auction here may be an option. If not I am leaning towards consignment. This is not a large collection, so it might not be worth consigning. Most of these coins are fairly common, and I strongly suspect that in a lot of cases they might be worth more in melt value. However, I would rather see them go to someone who would appreciate them as coins.

I guess it may be helpful for me to give a general list. If I have a date that is fairly rare I'll note it, so here goes:
9 Peace dollars, (1921)
5 Morgans, a couple really nice
6 Barber dimes
80+ Mercury dimes, (1921-D)
All Roosevelts from 1946-1963, except 1955-s, plus some duplicates
8 Standing Liberty quarters
5 Barber halves, (1896-O)
21 Walking Liberty halves
9 Franklins Halves
17 Kennedy halves, 12 are 64's in AU or better
G. W. Carver Half
100 Buffalo nickles
4 Indian Head cents
Almost all Jefferson nickles from 1938-1963
All 1941-1963 Lincoln Cents
A bunch of 1909-1940 Lincoln Cents
A couple mixed rolls of cents
A couple mixed rolls of nickles
A pile of Foreign coins
A few foreign notes
$20 Federal Reserve Note, series 1950B

Keep in mind that my Dad pulled these from circulation, so they are not in the best condition. Unless someone starts to complain I will probably be posting pictures in the grading area over the next few weeks. I'm hoping this will give me an idea of what I've got while improving my meagre grading skills.

I can say no one on this board will complain to any picture you post or any question you may have. everyone here is he to help other and learn themselves. so post away and ask as mainy question that you have. If it were me and I got that collection of coins I would stick with this board alittle while and post picture and ask question and you will be to 50 post in no time. then you can list your coin here to sell. I see coins selling very fast here and at fair prices. plus there is no ebay fees. so you can campare ebay prices to what you have and then most them for that price.

But how now with all of the searching and time you spend with these new coins you might have trouble selling them they may grow on you and become part of your collection.

Please post as many as you like in the grading section. That's what it's there for. We will all do our best to help you out. Please make sure that you start a new thread for each coin and provide large, clear pics (about 5"x5" is good). Put the date and type in the subject line. This way, you will get members who are more experienced in a particular series looking at your coins.

"Show me the money!"

I will as soon as I figure out how to get a good picture. I'm working with my wife's camera, which takes a really good picture of everything except coins. For some reason the color doesn't come out right. I took some pictures of a 64 Kennedy, mainly because it is one of the better looking coins I have. Unfortunately, the color/luster doesn't show, and neither do the 2 really small dings on Kennedy's neck. For some reason the pictures look like there are 2 bag marks in the hair that are not there. I need to get more detail & the colors right because one of the Morgans has a lightly toned obverse.

You might want to check out the "Coin Photography" on this forum. Might help, won't hurt.

Your going to want to keep that 1921 D Mercury dime, for it is one of the top three coins in the set. Or, you could offer it to me to finish my set.

I'm not sure what I am going to do with the 21D mercury. Some of the Mercurys I have look to be in the F range to me, unfortunately that's not one of them. It might grade G on a good day.
