I REALLY want one of these exact coins. I see on ebay there are quite a few with differing effigies. But none are quite as Data-ish as this one.

Of the 15 mints that made falling horsemen, Siscia offers the least in what I would call skillful die cutting. Sirmium is not far behind (or ahead if you prefer). All of the mints have their characteristics and Gallus was not a handsome fellow from most evidence but this coin is ridiculous. It also is from that period when the weight standards were changing quickly and there was demand for large quantities of by then nearly worthless coins. I suppose we all can decide if we want the best or the worst style available but I agree that this one is 'special' in the worst sense of the word.

wow - 15 mints! Do you have a good reference site I could go to to find info on how they engraved - what metals/tools etc they used for dies?

There's a section that talks about how ancient coins were made, and plenty of other great info on ancient coins and collecting them, in this link. A list of the Roman mints (excluding provincial mints) here. And the corresponding map for the above link here

I believe I have a coin of this guy, haven't yet found the exact one I'm still working on getting all the dirt off so it's hard to see the words but on the reverse there is only a single man holding up what looks at the moment like a ball in one hand and a long thin stick or two in the other that runs parallel to his body it also looks like he's standing ontop of words or numbers. Only have a mobile phone to take pictures at the moment so the quality is terrible and I won't bother uploading it but once I get them cleaned up a little better I will.

to the forum Dekscolleks. When you're happy with it do post it, we would like to see it and could help you ID it if you're struggling. If it is Constantius II the coin you describe could be this one... ...with a reverse inscription of SPES REIPVBLICE, the text below his feet would tell us where the coin was minted, the above was minted in Nicomedia between 355 and 361AD.

yes I can make out the VBLICE the edges of the coin are a bit chipped away in some areas, pretty sure it says SPES too but under his feet it looks like an λ with a line across the bottom of it then it looks like it says SIN lol there's definately an S but it looks like 4 letters and I cant make the N and the letter after it out too well, the last letter looks like a V but the man on the reverse is similar enough to be the same image. I took some more on the phone and this was the best I could get

I can just see enough to help You have a coin of Julian II, very, very similar to the above Constantius II coin but Julian followed him as Emperor (360-361), they were cousins and Julian served as Caesar over the western provinces from 355AD. Your coin was produced sometime between 355 and 360 as he is called Caesar on it (NOB C), if he were the Emperor when it was minted it would say AVG for Augustus. Your coin reads: DN IVLIAN-VS NOB CSPES REI-PVBLICE, emperor standing left in military dress, helmeted, holding globe and spear. I think your mintmark is (Delta)SISV meaning it was minted in Siscia (Croatia).

Thank you so much for your help, I bought 10 uncleaned coins from an ebay seller although that one is the only one that appears to have chunks out of it, it was the easiest to make out. I mailed the seller a couple of times before buying as I haven't bought coins before and am only just getting into it this is some of what they said Quote: these coins are authenticated by their size and excavation location. At times, samples are taken out and cleaned followed by attribution of the coin to make sure that the coins are roman. We have been handling ancient artifacts for many years which makes the identification of roman coins extremely obvious. Quote: The coins we sell are pooled from different excavation sites in Europe mainly form the Balkans and upper Balkan regions, hence this creates variety for buyers.
Nearly all coins in this listing will be bronze, however in rare circumstances buyers might get a silver coin which is encrusted and needs restoration. There are chances of finding a uncommon or rare bronze coin as not all silver coins are considered rare.

Glad to have helped, hopefully you'll get hooked and become a regular poster It is very easy to get hooked to be honest when you start reading about the Emperors on your coins and pretty much everyone on here likes an 'attribution challenge' so if you need any help with your others let us know. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_the_Apostate

Thanks bobby, I read about bronze disease and I'm not sure if some of my coins have it or not, they are more of a white or grey in appearance and have some green on them I thought perhaps it was mineral or something else as it doesn't appear to be soft but I have no real knowledge of what it looks or feels like to compare it to. I think some of them have a similar head to the ones on this thread aswell. I would like help with my others but am still working on cleaning them at the moment which could take a while.. also wondering if deionised water works just as well as distilled for cleaning, I am only really using a short bristled toothbrush and water as I don't want to try anything that could be more abrasive or damaging being as inexperienced as I am :P I would be more than happy to show them to you but I have to leave for work soon so it will have to wait until I get home in 6 or so hours. Thank you both for the welcome too
