I sent four coins in to NGC, one came back as cleaned a 1949-D Franklin with full bell lines, it never has been, one came back with the correct grade (MS-65) but the label was printed with the wrong date and they wouldn't attribute the error variety it is, a 1959 Franklin half with the double die reverse, the third coin was the grade I had expected it would get (MS-66) but they left off of the label that the dime has full split bands a 1941-S. The fourth coin was a Three Cent Silver with a 180 degree rotated reverse which got a grade lower than I had expected it to get. It was a solid AU with virtually no wear and they deemed it an XF-45. I doubt I will ever send another coin to NGC for grading. I do have an 1891 Liberty Seated dime I'm thinking of sending to PCGS because if it isn't uncirculated it definitely is an AU-55 at least if not an AU-58. I bought it off of ebay and got it at a super low price. An 1889 the seller had which ended a few minutes after the 1891 went for almost double what I paid for the dime I got and it wasn't quite as nice. Ed ANA LM-3175

I have sent one coin to be graded and the reason I have done so is I am considering selling it and once graded it could bring much more.

Although I would buy a slabbed coin would be to establish authenticity, I feel that the expense should be covered by the seller, not myself. Couldn't have said it better myself. I would never pay for that service, and I don't like slabs. I have bought slabbed coins, but all of them have been freed and placed in my albums. I like to buy slabbed coins for keys that may be faked a lot.

I have slabbed varieties. Mostly because as an online dealer it is almost essential when selling a high dollar variety. I have been tempted at times to send in some super high grade coins because of the price differential. I haven't yet. I have bought some slabbed coins because they were good deals. For instance I have an almost complete collection of modern ( last 25 years) Lincoln proofs that I picked up for less than $5 each....shipped. PF69, well worth it!

It's kinda nice to see someone else besides me having problems with NGC. I started sending in coins for certification at PCI and SEGS, then later crossing over the rarer ones to ANACS and was surprised that the PCI graded coins came back in the same grades in the ANACS holder... I also had problems with NGC not listing the Variety on a MS65 1943 DDO Quarter, even though I paid the extra Variety fees... This Quarter now resides in a PCI Signature Series Holder (J.T.Stanton) with the correct variety, and when I telephoned NGC to advise that PCI had cracked out one of their NGC holdered coins at my request and it now resides in a new PCI holder, they could care less (so much for NGC quality)... I wanted the variety listed on the holder as the Cherry Pickers Guide valued this variety at $500 in MS65 and a non-listed variety at that time was $35. Many people here will only use/purchase PCGS or NGC TPG Coins... I myself, will never send another coin to NGC and believe PCGS (IMHO) are overpriced (considering 60% of PCGS Coins submitted to CAC don't meet their standards)... I sent a number of B/U Morgans to ANACS and believe they were strict on their grading and often wonder if I would have received higher grades if I were a well known dealer with large bulk submissions... Just sayin'

Well, as for problems..... My Grandfather owned a Casino in Carson City and was an active Coin Collector. My Uncle inherited the bulk of his collection. On a visit to him a few years ago he opened one of the MINT SEWN bags of Morgans that he had inherited. That bag had 1887 S Morgans. We Cherry picked through that whole bag for the very best coins. My Uncle had never submitted anything to a TPG and wanted to give it a try. At that point my Uncle had been collecting for 68 years. The coin he submitted was an easy MS67. No slide marks, no contact marks, beautiful Cameo DMPL. It came back body bagged, "cleaned". Needless to say he has never submitted anything again. Oh and it was PCGS.

Quote: considering 60% of PCGS Coins submitted to CAC don't meet their standards Because CAC only stickers the A and B grade coins. Not everything is going to be a strong to high end of their grade coin. They would actually be misgrading if all their coins did sticker

I personally went with (No) since I have never slabbed a coin. Not to say I never will. Right now I'm just not interested. I imagine if I did, I would crack it out of there within a day or two.

First off, I didn't vote because my reason was not listed. I have never sent a coin to a TPG service yet. Not to say I never will as I am still contemplating sending some of my raw Morgans to ANACS to have graded and have the VAM attribution put on the label.

Dave700x, Does ANACS add all VAM attributions or just some? How will you decide which to have labeled by rarity , increased value or just because? I'm curious as I may slab some of my more valuable coins for awareness , protection, etc and am curious which to slab. I am not ready to slab anything and may not ever as I love the raw look. Yet if I keel over, I don't want my son to take them to the local pawn shop nor do I want them damaged....

@Kellyk as far as I know ANACS will add any VAM number to a label. I could swear I've seen VAM 1 on a label. I think NGC and PCG will only recognize the top 100, HOT 50 and HIT LIST 40. I'm not sure about the Kimpton and elite clashed. I haven't decided what the criteria is yet for my cut list. I'll definitely send the higher interest and R6 and R7 rarities. After that I'm not sure. I definitely agree with you about identification for future family (we hope) collectors.

I've had a few variety and error coins slabbed. And a few BU coins. Mostly to sell them in the near future. I went with ANACS, since they are cheaper, but I think they are strict in their grading.

Pretty much a useless service IMO. Unfortunately necessary to authenticate in today's world of counterfeits (sometimes)
