Very, very sure. I even tested it with the XRF and examined the rim with the SEM.

SPP - Could you post a couple more pictures at different angles . In the picture you provide it looks like there is a possibility that a round one was given sides . If you look in the picture especially above the "5 cents" the rim looks rounded over .

I think the lack of denticles would rule that out immediately. I have another picture I can put up - but I no longer have the coin...

Easy to remove something that is there ( not saying this one ) . The rim doesn't look right in the pictures . Being different materials , the striking pressure would have been different . The "nickel" shouldn't have struck up so nice .

I don't have a picture of the obverse. But, the owner of this coin wanted me to test and confirm the composition of some of the pattern pieces in their collection. The coin I tested, and photographed in my lab, is the same coin seen here:

http://www.currencymuseum.ca/collec...5-cents-1942

The odd part is, that this coin is catalogued as a "trial strike", but it is circulated and 100% nickel. Trial strikes are never circulated. I think it is as others surmised - a nickel planchet strike by dies intended for tombac blanks.

SPP - Is it the exact same coin in the link ? The coin in the link looks weaker struck ( which one would suspect in this case ). If is is the exact one then it most likely is just a wrong planchet strike . They don't look the same - must be different lighting if they are .

It is the same coin - with vastly different photographic techniques. My photo was taken with an iPhone. Look at the large mark in the fields above the N in CENTS, it is the same.

Interesting development! What has been the museum curators' response? Did the coin's owner influence the assessment?

No. Once I had it hand, I told the curator what I thought it was... and he agreed. If this sucker was pulled out of circulation, potentially there could be others?

Interesting piece , most likely a wrong planchet strike . Photos online can be so deceiving .
