Pictures and a list/quantity of dates/mintmarks of the various coins will help quite a bit.

Purchase a RedBook from a local coin store or book store if you have not yet done that. It will show which coins have a chance of being above average in price.

With you coins worn and mostly quarters and dimes the dates and mints to search for are 1932 d and 1932 s in quarters. In Mercury dimes 1921, 1921 d, 1942 2 over 1, and 1916 d are your keys any worn Roosevelt dimes are only worth the silver in them.

to the Forum!!

Congratulations on your new collection!

I agree the purchase of a RedBook would be a great start, and I would immediately start your education process here at the US Coin Facts section here on the CCF:

http://www.coincommunity.com/us_coin_facts/

and of course,

Good opportunity to learn about coins. First, don't clean them... that destroys value. Second, as a minimum, they are worth 21-23X face just in silver content so you do have something of real value.

RedBook would definitely be a good start, to at least determine if you have any key dates

Ship them to me! Just kidding. Since you probably don't know the differences between the grades of the coins and until you can get a copy of the Red Book the website Numismedia.com will give an idea of which coins have any value over their intrinsic metal content and you can separate them from the rest. By doing this if/when you decide to take these to a coin to sell you'll be less likely to get taken. advantage of.

Congratulations and welcome to the Community! What a great opportunity for you to dig around CCF a bit and find answers to your questions.

There are many different sources to help you learn, but here you can ask questions and get good feedback in return. Good luck.

I don't have enough posts yet so maybe somebody else can give the website everyone uses to tell the silver value for each of the coins. When I try to give it I get blocked.

inherited some old coins-What to do? ? ?

My thanks in advance to central texan for letting me use his/her inquiry as a starting point.
[Not that I asked! I am just making the assumption.]

With so many inquiries of this type we all begin to sound like a broken record! [Boy,
the youngsters here do not know what a "record" is!]

With any and all of these inquiries, the following information should be included:

"I am "99" years old and I have inherited coins from my "xxxxxxxxx" who
collected/assembled/amassed/hoarded these coins during the years "9999-9999".

This immediately gives us a clue as to what you may have.

"Some old coins" is a relative term. What is "old" to a neophyte may have been in circulation when I was 10 years old.
To me, a 1959 Lincoln Cent with the Memorial design was a new coin!

"Buy a Red Book." Perhaps. The common advice. But with the Internet resources this may not be necessary.
Identification as to type is simple. Within the CCF is all of the info needed. The members will direct you.
Better dates and mint marks? Many of us have those memorized!

"To sell or to start a collection?"
That is your decision. Personally, I try to give you knowledge and direction and then let you decide.
If you do not care for coins that is fine. Sell them and use the proceeds as you see fit.
IF you are thinking of starting a collection, well, we can help you do so. After all, the CCF
is dedicated to teaching.

"How much is it/are they worth?
We can only answer when you have done the above AND provided pictures, if possible.

Speaking only for myself, it is the collective duty of the CCF to provide answers to all questions.
Be they from collectors or folks who have just been burdened with the disposition of a family member's coins,
we should all refrain from placing our personal bias upon a new member and instead allow him or her
to ask for advice and then we provide it.

If the powers that be see fit, this little start should be polished into a "sticky" for helping people in
central texan's position, and everyone else, to proceed with confidence.

Are we not, after all, here to serve?

While I realize that the Internet is the wave of the future, it might be easier to check and see if there is a local coin club in your area. Show up at their next meeting and speak to a club officer about what the coins may be worth and they can usually steer you to someone that can tell you if you have anything valuable and possibly recommend someone honest to deal with in the event you just want to sell them. Do a google search for local clubs and see. I do evaluations for my club all the time but I always refer them to a trusted dealer if they want to sell just prevent a conflict of interest.

you can also look at the photograde website to get a kind of idea what the "pretty worn coins" grade and that will also help you get a better idea of value. There is no way to give a value of a coin without knowing the condition and the condition and value varies greatly. If you can not take pictures of the coins and post them on the forum for grading/value assessment then there is no way to really give you a concrete answer short of taking the coins to a dealer and letting him give you his opinion
