That's it!

Notice the little notch missing on the left side of the T in CENT. It's present on my coin as well.

Thanks for finding the culprit.

I'm wondering if there is anyone on the list who is a Flying Eagle cent specialist who might like to examine this coin in person and let the rest of us know what to look for so others don't get fooled.

The person you ought to show this to is definitely Rick Snow, who was mentioned earlier in this thread. He's scheduled to be in your neck of the woods at the Rosemont, IL PNG & ANA shows from August 2nd through the 9th. His website: http://www.indiancent.com/

That's the difference between a replica and a counterfeit. A counterfeit is meant to deceive, and thus would not have the word COPY on it, while a replica is meant as a faithful historical memento, which, according to law, must have the word COPY on it.

I remember you mentioning that when you first posted the coin, and I couldn't find a match--well, with certified examples. That detail should be a marker for this counterfeit.

No telling how many of these are out there just waiting to nab unsuspecting collectors (and dealers).

"Aliexpress" is a well known Chinese outfit that sells this crap. They are probably just a front for the counterfeiter and if they get shutdown they'll just open up another front out of the same mail drop. The Chinese authorities won't do anything to "Ali" unless "Ali" starts counterfeiting Chinese coins.

I suspect that the coin that was sent in was played with to give it the matte looking golden finish. Since the edge of the coin is "red" that is a giveaway that the coin has problems. The weight difference is a huge red flag, too.

Based on the pics in the original post, I too thought it was real. Wow. Learn something new everyday.

I actually feel a lot better now. I never saw the original posting of the coins and don't know how good the pics were, but this coin does look fake to me now. Much of it looks too soft. The mottos, the wheat ends, etc. I probably would have missed it in passing, but upon inspection, and most definitely if in hand, it's clearly fake. I feel better because I don't want stuff out there that is indistinguishable from real.

I've seen a coin at a small show and wanted to buy it, but didn't know about the nick. This would help me.

Seems I'm too new to send you an email. The forum thinks I'm a fraud or some other 98% scam person. So I couldn't PM you.

I collect Jefferson nickles, Indian Heads and Flying Eagles. Limited, cheap and fun.

I would not sell it at all, not unless you deface it first. It is a crime to knowingly sell counterfeits.

I would donate it to Rick Snow so he can publish these findings to the collectors and studiers of the FEC and IHC series.

After reading this entire thread the main pointer to this being a fake is the weight and a tiny notch in the "T".
Just thinking outside the box here but could this coin simply have been minted on an underweight planchet? ,Not an unheard of event.

No, it's called rules that everyone here must abide by. Did you bother to read them?
Secondly, you are attempting to buy which is not allowed yet.
I strongly suggest you go back and read the rules.

I think it is something like 50 post or so before you get email privileges, you don't get to go to "First Base" on the first "Date" on this Site.

Actually, looking at the decent images, everything looks mushy and it's clear it's either a fake or heavily dipped or something. I missed this thread earlier - was interesting to read through!

Sorry to robbudo. I love FECs, so I'll keep an eye out, but this one should be easy enough to spot.
