The seller does look basically harmless. probably an honest mistake. I would still prefer a buyer return a coin before I give a refund.

Yeah, it would be nice if the TPG's would give a reason since the customer paid for the information. Maybe they don't want counterfeiters to hone their skills...or something. IMO the TPGs should tell WHAT is wrong with a coin. NOT GENUINE is a broad brushed as you can get.

Except for the weight this is a good (and dangerous) fake.

I don't think my point has been taken clearly. The weight is definitive to me. A real one won't be that light. Not now, not ever. Their Weight Tolerance was on the order of 0.13g, and yours has a variation of more than twice that. Heck, I would suspect a Morgan that was 0.29g light, if it weren't very worn.

With that said....

If it's a fake, it's a great one, and my own curiosity would be forcing me to look further into it. My guess for NGC is that they XRF'ed it and found a wrong composition to back up the improper weight; that's something you can have tested at many large-scale gold dealers. XRF is becoming a standard tech for gold dealers who can afford the initial investment.

I hope that NGC will respond to my email and let me know if it was more than just the weight (and you correct, .3 gram is about an 8% variant from normal and a major red flag)or if they did use other means to determine that it is not genuine.

My reputation was quickly questioned with a couple of group members suggesting I should be reported to ebay as a seller of multiple fake coins.

That was a learning experience for me--to not make snap judgments based on photographs that might mislead due to lighting or camera distortion. I'm glad you stuck around despite our mistakes!

So I'm curious...does this fake have the noticeable extra thickness you would expect from a real CuNi cent, or does it look more like a bronze cent in thickness? Perhaps the counterfeiters did not think of that detail?

Wow Paul, that's awful. I feel your pain- I bought a counterfeit Buffalo nickel last year and by the time I figured it out, the seller just dodged me and refused to communicate. Not that this post will make you feel better, but at least you know you're not alone.

Perhaps you can find a way to share info about the seller to help others avoid the same outcome.

The coin looks like a regular thick Flying Eagle. However, the edges are a bright copper, something I hadn't noticed before. You'd expect for a coin nearly 160 years old there might be a bit of toning on the edges since there's some on the obverse. My MS-63 has toned edges.

I should have noticed that.

Funny all the things you notice about a coin when it's too late, huh?

I've tried to take some more decent photos of the coin so people can scrutinize it to their heart's content.

Please share your comments on it!

Now knowing it's not real, the obverse legend looks mushy to me, especially the AM in AMERICA.

But it's still a pretty convincing coin to my layman's eye.

It's easy to be an Monday morning quarterback so I would not feel too bad about finding out from NGC. A good scale will be your best friend.

Remarkably good fake. If they went through that much trouble to counterfeit a modestly valuable coin, why get the weight wrong? Virtually none of the value is in the metal

Some of the letters don't look shaped right. I notice the "O" in OF looks below the baseline.
