Hello,
All I can say is, switch your coin source, review them again, and ‘take it to the edge' for the presidents in an attempt to breathe some excitement into an otherwise seemingly lifeless endeavor similar to a dwindling flame en route to suffocating itself from absorbing rarified air, resulting from the failure to locate that unique ‘diamond in the rough'.
For me, 75% of the fun is focusing on the actual ‘hunt' and not necessarily expecting the ‘find' which obviously would be very satisfying but routinely unexpected ‘icing on the cake'.

Is this thread about the Presidential dollar coin series? because the Presidential dollar coin series was originally intended for circulation just like the half and sac. at one point you could order them from the mint at face for free until people started abusing it to get credit card returns and airplane miles and ruined it for everyone. |

I look at the Presidential dollars as almost a "free" way to build a complete series of coins. By free, I'm talking about the premium over face for the coins as these tend to go for 1x to 1.5x face in Unc & Proof. I recently picked up 2007 & 2008 mint sets for $1 over face per set. As the sales of the sets containing these coins stabilize at or just above face, they will get broken up even more. The Presidential dollars represent $8 face value and I believe these have the largest chance of being spent to recoup the cost of the other coins. Add all of the rolls collectors are setting on that are not appreciating in value taking up a large amount of face value. There are still an ridiculous amount of the early regular business strike coins just sitting in vaults waiting for demand that may never come. For these years (07-10), the satin coins might be the way to go. The later years don't have satin coins but were not intended for circulation. With the relative low mintages, these could get interesting if the coins find their way into circulation which I think will eventually happen. The wild card is will there ever be any collector demand for these coins. I think many collector are tired of the dead president theme in our coinage, but that could change if this series was a send off to the presidents and all coinage was revised after the series ends (I don't think that would ever happen though). With saying all of that, if collect what you like, you will be happy in the end. |

Ummmm, the Pres dollars most certainly WERE circulaing coins at the beginning. The first five years they were produced in large quantities for circulation. They became NFC in 12 I believe it was. You can order boxes of them all day long at the bank.

I too see the $1 coins as a cheap hobby. Get them from rolls at the bank for face value to get the best coins that I can. As long as I have one of each in ok condition I am good. :) Keeps the wife involved as well going through rolls. She enjoys spending the time doing it.

I was going to give up collecting them also. I haven't even bought the 2014 proof set, but I looked at some of the "sold" listings on ebay and there is an interest out there in complete sets. Especially for the sets that haven't been "cut out" of mint sets. The ones that came in their own boxes, so I guess at this point I will keep up the series. |

I stopped at the bank Wed and the teller had some gold dollars, so I bought them for face and went home a checked them out and I found a Benj Harrison a 2012 S mint that has been circulated. Nice strike, no luster. Probably a pocket piece.
Book says none for circ. Whats the mintage? I thought it was a good find for a dollar

i was collecting the series, but my album stops around the time they axed the series basically. I'm not too excited about obtaining the rest of them for 3 times the face value.

I agree with the sentiment that they're almost "free" to make a collection--you're only really paying face value or a small premium for BU coins outside of the proofs. I've started a Dansco for the Presidential coins (and one for the Statehood Quarters with plans for the ATB Quarters) for that reason. |

I started a collection some time ago and eventually spent almost all of them--just too much money to tie up in a series that doesn't really excite me.

The bank tellers have them but do not as a rule give them out to people unless they are requested. I have stopped spending one dollar bills. I get Kennedy halves, any type of dollar coins, large and/or small, and two dollar bills and have not had any problems using these instead of a dollar bill. |
