Hey Carl, are any of those pre-20th century sets that were completed?

Actually not to many. For example my 3 sets of Liberty Head Nickels are all what I call complete. Then there is that slot for the 1913. Not sure if I had one I'd put it in an album. So far 2 sets of Shield nickels. Now working on set #5 Indian Head/Buffalo Nickels with only 2 missing. Most sets are like 10 complete Lincoln Cents, 10 complete Mercury dimes, only set #1 Liberty Head Dimes though. And lots, lots more.

Carl, I'd love to see photos of the Shield nickel sets, especially the key dates (1871, 1880, etc). Same goes for the Liberty nickels (1884, 1885, etc).

Do you upgrade your completed set when finished, or do you move on to the next set? What grade do you find "album quality?"

Exactly my problem. When I finish an Album, I start another of the same type. Then as I acquire a new coin if better than in set #1, I move the coin from #1 to #2 and the new one goes into set #1. Now this is a massive problem with some sets. For example I recently acquired an MS grade 1955 Double Die Lincoln Cent that had to go into set #1. Then the one in #1 goes to #2 and from #2 to #3, etc up to set #10. Now the one from #10 goes into a 2x2 and into one of now 9 boxes of such duplicates. This means a massive amount of duplicates in 2x2's. So many that not long ago I had 9 sets of Mercury dimes. Someone I know gave me a Whitman Classic Album for Mercury dimes. At home I filled it completely with duplicates from the boxes of 2x2's with the exception of the 42D/41. Then an amazing thing was at a flea market I found one in a junk box for less than $1. Time to start #11? Who knows.
Up until recently I had 97 Albums. Then the last Mercury one made it 98. Then at a recent coin show a dealer gave me an entire box of about 30 to 40 more Whitman Classic Albums so I'm working on them now from duplicates. No end in sight.

Prethen;
By complete I meant one from each year. I was using the Whitman albums as a guide.
The 3 cent sets are a mix of MS and Proofs. The 3 cent silver set has 1851-1862/1 in AU or better and 63-73 in proof. The 3 cent nickel set has one from each year in AU or proof. The proofs in the 3CN set are 77,78,80,82,83,84,85,86,87,87/6,89. I also have 80(F),82(EF),83(EF) in non proof. I just happened to pick these up along the way.

I put these together several years ago and at the time just looked for one for each year. Once I had one from each year, I moved on to other sets and didn't try to get both MS and Proofs. I was looking for high grades to fill holes in folders back then. Although all the proofs except for a couple are Certified. Mostly ANACS.

The Shield nickel set is the same. A mix of proofs and AU or better coins.

Started as a kid in 1958. Built most of it in the late 80's thru the mid 90's.

I went with the Dansco albums to consider it a set. I was in 2x2' s before, and I was trying to figure out what would constitute a "complete set". I figured that Dansco albums were used enough in the numismatic world, to give me a guideline of a complete set. All of my Albums include proof only issues. Having said that, I have to following sets completed or up to date...

Indian Head cents
Lincoln Cents
2-cent Pieces
3-cent Pieces (- the 1884 and 1885)
Liberty nickels
Buffalo nickels
Jefferson nickels
Liberty Head Dimes
Mercury dimes
Roosevelt dimes
20-cent Pieces
Standing Lib Quarter (- the 1916)
Washington quarters
Washington State Quarters
Walking Lib Half Dollars
Franklin half dollars
Kennedy half dollars
Peace dollars
Eisenhower dollars
SBA Dollars
Sac Dollars

I am one that enjoys the hunt. I travel for my job, so it's interesting to go to coin stores all over the country to see what they have. It gives me a better selection, than only going to my local shop .

The 7070 is a minimum grade of VF to uncirculated and Proof. I am slowly upgrading the more circulated pieces. Franklins are vf to Proof - upgrading also. Buffalos and Lincolns minimum grade of Fine. I buy the best I can afford and upgrade as I find better examples. Thanks for asking.

Prethen: I seldom take photos of coins. Never could figure out why I should. I have the coins so why take photos of them? I'm to old to start a collection of photos of coins since I have the coins. I know many do that all the time and there must be a reason but not for me unless I find a reason. Also, coins in Albums do not take great photos. The covers must be held back, the slides reflect light excessively, the coins are not in the same depth. Just not practical.
