I paid $102 for 1916 Liberty Walker in EF condition bought on ebay. Red Book says $225 in EF and $160 for VF. I don't have a pic to show. I need to learn how to do that. I do think ebay tends to drive down prices. I can go there and find 1921 Walkers no problem whereas my local coin shop can't find them. Silver prices have slipped a bit. I remember when silver went for less than 8 bucks an ounce. It may return to that price for all we know. I do intend to start a Peace dollar collection or maybe a Liberty Standing quarter collection. Talk about a coin that was used and is worn as heck. Which would be easier to collect a Peace dollar or Liberty Standing quarter in the sense of getting coins in at least EF condition. I guess I am an EF kind of guy for most coins but love them in AU condition. I have a budget in my head.

Heck, when I first became a Mod here I was accustomed to picking up Mint State 1921 Morgans for $10-15 on ebay. Made it a lot easier to collect varieties.

Because of my age I remember silver dollars being used in everyday transactions. In other words I was getting them for face -- but they weren't MS. Montana in 1960. Alaska in 1963.

So in 1960, I'd have been teething on the thing... your oldness...

In 1960 I was over 20yrs from birth and started the silver bug in 2012 at $30+/oz... I cringe When I read the old treasury release stories but a great read they are!

@terry8835 The Red Book is a great source for general information, just not a price guide.

So it is basically whatever the market will bare? There are a number of coin shops here locally, but I can't find coin shows where I can get some more opportunity. I live in Tampa, Fl. I end up on ebay trying to not get messed up by tricky sellers who will not specify condition, and show coins from all weird angles to disguise things IMO. I do remember buying a Tiffney silver tray for $70 in 2002. It was like 14 ounches of silver. I sold it like a dumb ass, and took a loss when I was dabbling in collectible business. I used to buy and sell at auctions and was a steady loser. I quit. I did not realize you need to buy and hold. John

bear not bare - please don't go exposing yourself at the LCS. Of course it's priced at what the market says... with a premium for ignorance. If you can't find a local show in TAMPA? You aren't trying. There's one every weekend within 50mi - try http://www.coinzip.com/

Tampa? There's more shows on the Tampa-Orlando axis than anywhere else in the country. NGC and ICG are both within 5 miles. Maybe the highest concentration of dealers anywhere. And FUN, which nobody else in the country has - a coin club big enough to throw the largest coin show in the country each year. Floridians are lucky when it comes to numismatics.

You were right according to the website you pointed me at. Do you live in Tampa Area. There are many shows around here. They are just not advertised in the newspaper or other sources I have seen. I will make it to some of those shows. Many local coin shops have gone under lately, and some of the others just buy gold. I use Gilder Coins. The owner is an honest guy, but his prices start at retail, but once you get to know him a little he gets more reasonable. I got 1916-S Liberty Walker for $60. It is in just good condition. His 1921, and 1921-d were out of sight pricewise. I never considered joining a coin club but perhaps I should. I am rank beginner. Just plugging holes in my Liberty Walker collection is expensive. Coin collecting is coin buying.

Ive been to gilder a few times, he has a lot of inventory but I'm always scared I'm gonna get robbed when I walk out of that place into the ghetto. Have you tried a village coin off fletcher? I think they have the best prices in the tampa area.

I thought Village Coins was closed? I tried to call and got a disconnection notice. Next time I am at the VA I will try them. North Tampa is worse than the area around Gilder Coins. That area is Seminole Heights/West Tampa. If all the run down crap was removed from that area they would be selling $300,000 condos as it is close to downtown. I used to stroll in West Tampa and not worry about a thing. Now a gun is required. Remarkable houses in some streets and old shotgun houses for long dead cigar workers.
