My grandparents gave me an 1881 Haiti One Gourde coin about 20 years ago when I first got into collecting. It's a large silver dollar size coin, and is 90% silver. No idea how it came into their possession. I still have it.

Sounds like a nice find if it is an ASE.

Very nice! I once made smalltalk with a customer who received a $50 gold eagle as payment (for face) at his restaurant. People will do crazy things!

I still have the two Morgans that my grandfather gave me. In fact they're sitting on my desk now.
Now if I could just get my parents to start saving coins for me...

People thinking they are being "nice" sometimes leave my waitresses morgans, peace, ikes, ASE, ect. Little do they know those same waitresses toss them in the drawer and take out a dollar bill. I never complain because they'll come home with me for face value.

Who the heck "spends" an ASE? I've never heard of such a thing nor can I imagine ANY circumstance in which it can happen

I have also snagged an ASE for face. Stranger things have happened.

If I had plenty of money & nothing better to spend it on, well, maybe I'd buy Maple Leafs & spend them at face value when I was in Canada.

My grandmother, now 83, gave me a 1922 Peace dollar back in 2006 that she received from one of her customers that she used to sew for back in the 60's. I guess someone paid with that, and she ran this business out of her house basically, repairing peoples cloths while my grandfather was off at work as an electrician, where he made some really good money. My grandparents always save their change for me, and whenever my grandpa goes to the bank he grabs some rolls of coins for me. Recently, he gave me Two Cent rolls from the 60's (Cleveland Trust Wrappers; they closed in the 70's) and it had 37 wheats total, and the rest were coppers up til 1968. He's got an Eisenhower dollar from the bank, several 40%'s for me, clad halves, and one dime roll he picked up had a 46 silver in it. :P

That's ironic. I went to two banks today and asked for $2 bills. They usually have none, but the first bank had about $20 worth of them, and my pickup bank had $52 worth of them. While the young lady who had $52 worth of $2's went back to the vault, she said she can "trust me" with me looking at the stack, probably because I'm a long time customer LOL! This hobby sure has benefits. No Red seals or anything, but I did score a $2 2003 A Cleveland Ohio in about AU that my buddy needs.

So whoever spent that coin was able to read that it had the value of a dollar, but couldn't grasp the ".999 fine silver?"
Nice...

My grandmother left me quite a few 90% silver coins (2 1964 Kennedy halves and 5 Franklin halves) 2 red seal $2 bills ( a 1953 and a 1963A) and about 7 1$ silver certificate and 2 1976 2$ bills (I can get pictures up of the bills if asked) dollars when she passed away 3 years ago.
