I'd counter that the figure on the back of the Presidential dollars is the Statue of Liberty, not "Lady Liberty" as posed here. The statue is a fixed pose and likeness, and can be depicted from just about any angle (looking mainly at the platinum bullion coins for that observation), but Lady Liberty offers much more artistic flexibility.

You both make good points, but to take it a bit further one might argue that LIBERTY has never left our coinage.

(Except, of course, on the previously mentioned Presidential dollar where LIBERTY was replaced with the Statue of Liberty.)

I think it's kind of a silly poll. Why everyone I've ever talked to says they just love that Roosevelt dime. And who would not really, really love that Jefferson nickel? AHH the beauty of that Washington quarter. And replace those with things like Liberty Walking?
On a serious note though. I always wonder what it would take to get our government to change back to coins we all love?

Not exactly politically correct, as per usual, I think a man would look rediculous in Miss Liberty's dress ! --

I would like to see MUCH less of all these "new designs" & and parks & state playgrounds & some guy in a boat with geese flying around or a state bird or piano, etc., etc.
The classics were never boring to me, and they never should have ended.

If we were to ever make a major change to our coin design it would have to be a return to Liberty or another neutral symbol. There is no post-JFK president that you could put on the coin that wouldn't upset a large percent of the population (yes even Reagan) and I don't think there are any pre-JFK presidents not already on our currency that people would be familiar enough with to justify replacing the ones already there. The controversy around the $10/$20 bill redesign also shows what happens when you try to put real people on the bills.

I honestly think one problem is that Presidents (and founding fathers) have been on our coins and currency for so long now that relatively few people are left who remember the days when anyone but those guys were on them (the little used dollar coins excepted). Enough so that a lot of people may not even be aware our coins used to look very different from today.

Agreed !

Klinger was just about the most politically incorrect man in tv history...lol
Klinger doesn't have the legs to pull it off though, but he gets an "A" for the effort...

I would like to see a more updated Lady Liberty, sort of like the SBSS Freedom Girl.

I also feel that Liberty designs would be better than the current state of US coin design. We Should also pick a design for a coin and stick with it for a number of years. This merry go round of a different reverse every year gets old real quick. While a few of the new reverse designs have been intriguing, most have been rather boring or unimaginative.

Flying Eagle cent, Two Cent Piece, trime, Shield nickel. The four US coins that don't have LIBERTY on them in either the personified form, or the word LIBERTY.
