Quote: My question is, how long will they be available into 2017 ( I was thinking the same thing earlier. If they consider the 30th Annie ASE's as commems then they have to end sales on 12/31. This would make a VERY short season for the MS version. I'm sure they will say they are regular issue but even then they have to all be minted by 12/31. IF not we might have "all in" potential This year's Dollar set could be a winner also...

They are almost certainly already minting them (if they really plan to sell them). After all we know that they are already minting the gold Walking Liberty half dollar, and were well before they announced a release date for them. Hopefully a release date for the UNC ASE will be posted soon, probably when they have enough inventory at the fulfillment center to meet what they see as initial demand.

While we wait for a date on the 2016 UNC ASE, let's take a trip down memory lane. For starters, the 2006 20th Anniversary set. The coins have begun to tone slightly despite being in their original capsules and spending almost all of the past 10 years in the dark confines of the safe.

Great set and the one that kicked off the ASE boxed set "craze". I'm still surprised they didn't follow suit for the 30th anniversary.

Yup...kinda lame to just have 30th Annie on the rim....would have been cool to have a 30th embossed on the coin itself and multiple versions of that
Stuff on the rim just doesn't cut it...

And a side trip to the 2001-2011 Silver Medals. I like this set because of the four different surface textures used on both sides, and the eagle is way cool.

And finally, the 2013-W West Point Mint Special Set. Now, let's see, what else is there? Oh I know, the 2016-W 30th Anniversary UNC ASE ...

Before I forget, here is the setup I used for these latest photos: Canon EOS Rebel T4i (18MP), Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM lens set at 100mm, f/8, ISO-400 and a 31mm auto ectension tube. The macro flash was mounted but not used. The styrofoam blocks prevent hard shadows without cutting too much light.

More excellent photos, clair. And nice rig! I never really was interested in the 9/11 commemoratives, but your photos have made me think again.

They seem a little contrived but just as coins (whoops, medals, they do medal flip) I like them. The work that went into giving them four different surface textures (5 if you count mirror) makes them stand out from most other mint products.

The design itself was a little too non-classical for me at the time but I've since changed my tune. I understand what's going on in it better these days. I suppose. I was absolutely all for 9/11 commemoratives but at the time of release this design didn't trip my trigger.
Love your close-ups of the surface treatments, clair.
I do think that many of the commemorative proofs in the past couple years have the 5-finish treatment. Pretty cool if you ask me.
