I am thinking someone made a dive on that ship.

SS Gypsum Empress

I like these different ideas. Part of the fun is speculating, but hopefully someone will eventually come along with the answer.

Good mystery. I'm guessing a souvenir - spending money to encase half dollars as gaming chips seems illogical.

Here's my guess:

Someone who worked on the ship found a nice brass ring that fell off a rail or something and it just fit nicely around the coin. So there it is -- all that was needed after that was a stamping kit.

Sorry about the pictures, I just noticed they were rotated. I wanted to mention as well that the coin is stuck in good and won't pop out but it does turn or spin around inside the ring.

We own a thrift store in Nova Scotia. We buy a lot of estates and once in awhile we get coin collections and oddball coins like this one. I have no info on this coin and was hoping someone on here might have seen something like it to find out a bit more about it.

I've found out that there were more than one ss gypsum empress ships but with the year of the coin I believe its the one I mentioned in my first post. Living close to the Hantsport, NS port, it's probably from someone in the area who used to sail on that ship.

Yeah, I did a little search on the ship -- or ships. It's kind of interesting.

I found a site ShipsNostalgia.com. You could try posting your pic there and see if anyone else has seen an Encased Coin like yours or if they recognize that brass circle.

If someone does -- how fun would that be?

Wouldn't it be something if somebody recognized it? Or could ID the brass circle? -- that is, if it came off a ship.

Anyway, the more information you can get -- the more interesting it will be.
