Ok guys here it is....I would have tended to agree with F15 myself. So this is very interesting PCGS gave it this grade. I guess they are very forgiving of a coin this old. Your thoughts? Thanks again!

I'd like it at VF-20 and LOVE it at F-15. VF-30 seems a bit high. Very attractive notwithstanding.

If the color in the photo is accurate, grading that coin VF-30 is a massive over grade in my opinion. The reverse especially falls WAY SHORT of the VF-30 grade. There reverse needs a push to make Fine if the coin is graded based on that side. It's more like a VG-10.

I continue to be amazed at some of the coins/grades posted this month. I could see a VF20 but 30 is out of line - again.

I put this coin at VF 20 and was considering F 15. Is PCGS going down the path of another round of grade inflation? I do not understand how these overgraded coins get into the holder.

Bill, I also saw this coin in person at my LCS so it is the right color.

The reason for grade-flation is that grading for U.S. Coins has reached the mature phase of its product life cycle. There are not that many old coins left to grade. The TPGs push programs like special labels for modern coins, but the bottom line is they need to encourage more business. One way to do that is to relax their grading standards which encourages people to resubmit their previously graded coins for upgrades.
It is a vicious cycle. You lower tha standards and the bids tend to go down. That encourages the owners of properly graded coins to submit them for higher grades. Hence you end up with coins like this in a VF-30 holder.

Yes and the coin market has been weak for years now so TPG keep their profits up by inflating grades, thus encouraging more business by enriching themselves and their customers. It's frustrating because collectors start thinking a coin is VF, XF, AU or whatever the holder says and not what the coin actually should grade. The bottom line is more money for the TPG means the submitter (and TPG) stand to benefit and the collector ultimately loses. |

I'm amazed. I am glad so many others saw it the same way I did. I agree the grading is also overgraded and also explains they want to make money. Like the old saying goes. Buy the coin ... not the holder.
Not a big fan of grading services myself.
Not to take anything away from that coin. It's a wonderful coin to have.
