Fully agreed with the comments made by crystalk64....coloured by the Mints at the time of minting is a Mint issue and coloured afterwards by another party are colourised junk.

Some Mints produce really beautiful issues and it is very hard to get them now. Here is one of them from the Australian Kookaburra series.

Here is another one minted in 2005 by the Perth Mint. Mintage of 40,000 of which 2,000 only went on sale in Australia. The rest was sold overseas. Today, this coin has more than doubled in price if you can get one.I have not seen one listed on ebay for more than 6 months and dealers here do not have them.

Just cant seem to get myself into the colorised coins ,

Dont let it bother you justdidit !! If 200.00 bucks was all I spent before I got the book !! I would be more than happy !!

Just keep in mind you will probly hear this more than once, buy the book, study the coin, then buy the coin.

This takes the hucksters power away from them, education is the key ,, and even then a coin collector will buy something off the wall, I think its just our nature.

Thanks for confirming my foolish mistake...I will definately be staying away from colorized coins in the future! Luckily I only lost $60.00 in this deal, that's what I paid for it.

Those Aussie coins are stunning btw! Thanks for posting them!

So, my lessons learned today:
1- Do your research.
2- Don't buy "too much" on whim
3- Stay away from colorized coins unless they're too pretty to pass up :)
4- Keep an eye out for the year of the rooster coin!

Rick...you mentioned a book...what book should I invest in?

Thanks!

Ask this person what "they" pay to buy them back.
If you were to offer this coin to us, the purchase price would be $3.96 and I would happily sell it for $7.00 Maybe $10 if I saw someone really "wanted" the thing.

I will add this:

Any US coin that has been colorized has lost its numismatic value. Same goes for the plated coins. (racketeer nickel exception)

We have bought a few over the years for customers who wished to waste their money, but I will not pay anything over 60% bullion for the piece.

I get calls every week from someone who paid 20 dollars or more for a colorized Silver Eagle, and it breaks my heart.

I have one colorized Roo.
It was not done by the mint but after market colouring done by Downies before the Mint required them to Stop.

Obtained it because of the rairity of such coins.
I do not think it is pretty at all.
Just a conversation piece

I have one or 2 colored ASE. I didn't buy them, but I do like them. However, now having read the above, I won't buy one in the future. Unless it's just a very nice(looking) piece that I just have to have.

Rule of thumb----If it is done at the MINT it will always be a collectable----If done after leaving the Mint it will always be a worthless, altered coin that for the most part, you can't sell or give away!
The colorized Lunar Series from Australia is very popular down there and now that the world is catching on the secondary market is VERY strong on these items. The 2006 Year of the Dog is currently available and, if you like color, I wouldn't wait to long to try and locate one! Canada is also turning out some mint colored coins so you might have a look there as well!

Hi Terry,

I just read that the US mint does not produce or sell colorized coins, not even commemorative sets etc.

I guess if I'm going to buy any in the future, it should come from a mint that produces them directly.

The Lunar series is wonderful and while I now have developed somewhat of an aversion to colorized coins lol, I may just indulge!

The Royal Canadian Mint has done many coloured coins, My avatar is just one example. For me, I like them all and I have lots of them.

The term book refers to books particular to any series that you may decide to collect, For me those are reference books for Mercury dimes, and Lincoln cents,

related material for die varieties, I use Breens Encyclopedia of US and colonial coins, Morgan dollars would be the VAM book, Krause also produces a great reference ,, RedBook although not a true price guide is very useful for pictures, weights ,compositions of coins, ANA grading standards is another book that should be bought,Photograde
and other similar publications.

The whole Idea of buy the book, Is that a person educate themselves about any particular series of coins before buying, The resources of this forum are a great asset also, with folks who collect just about anything and everything here, it really can save a person alot of money on reference material..

combined knowledge here, with ND, catman, Nohope, Crystalk, Susanlynn, well you get the Idea, Is without a doubt second to none on the net.

If you need or want to purchase books that are of a particular coin ask which are used by the folks here, for any given series, Then Buy the book.

That is a pretty coin Lim.

When the mint produces a colored coin they do it with some style. Many countries do produce some colored coins for colectors. These older coins are colored by companies after a quick dollar. I'm afraid that the Morgan dollar shown above looks...ah...cheap. Too much eye shadow makes Lady Liberty look like a tart. Just my opinion.
