My first thought was this coin:
In Memory of Crazyb0 12-26-1951 to 7-27-2020 In Memory of Tootallious 3-31-1964 to 4-15-2020 In Memory of T-BOP 10-12-1949 to 1-19-2024

I have appreciation for both. You cannot get to where you are going unless you know where have been or something like that.

I also like bison nickel, along with many quarter designs.
I whip out silver proof quarters once a while to look at all those state designs ~~

You just can't beat the classics. Why do you think most of our bullion coins show classic designs. They tried that gold dollar with the "puny" looking Liberty and that sucked.

Quote:I like the Roosevelt dime for the moderns. And the Kennedy half is pretty formidable, too. I find it large and grandiose. Not many people would have made that choice.

To be sure, the classic designs are more beautiful and of higher artistic merit. But I would have to say that the Ike, the Kennedy, and the Sacagawea (with its original eagle reverse) rank up there as well. And many of the ATB Quarters are worthy of mention as well. I did not consider any of the bullion pieces since, like others have said, they utilize old designs.

Old school classics from where I sit.
When I think of the moderns, I think of today's coins being fabricated with the assistance of computer aided design (CAD). Heck, I don't even think the Mint has a Chief Engraver today. For me, (JMO) some of the designs coming out of the Mint today are embarrassing to me as an American and a collector!

Quote:Maybe Roosevelt dimes fall into the moderns, but they have had the same design since 1946 . It's hard to consider them anything but modern at this point given that the majority of their existence falls into the modern time frame. I'd say I wish they would make some changes to it, but after what they did to Lincolns and Jeffersons I hope they leave it alone.

Lincolns are great, and Jeffersons are OK, but SLQs, Mercs, Walkers are true art. Not to mention the classic gold coins.

Quote:Maybe Roosevelt dimes fall into the moderns, but they have had the same design since 1946 . I had a dream last night in which I found several short stacks of coins in the Coinstar reject tray (actually stacked within the tray). Being stacked was odd, of course, but I also found not one, but two, 1941 Roosevelt dimes. I was elated to find my first silver, but it all fell apart when I realized that the coin did not exist until 1946. So much for dreams! I prefer a mix of both. However, I will point out what we call classic, I am certain people 100 years ago were having this same discussion about their MODERN coins. So before our lifetime are over (middle aged folks), some of what we call moderns will likely be classic. I personally already consider the orig design of the Washington quarter and Jeff nickel to have entered that category. However, that is me and how I my thoughts on what moves a coin from modern to classic. Other opinions are certainly quite different.
