Thanks Merclover ;) I know LMC aren't as pretty Mercury dimes or Canadian small cents but they aren't terrible

And what's wrong with being Canadian? I am proudly Canadian. If you were speaking of Canadian coins, they are ALL beautiful! Especially the young Queen Elisabeth!

I'm not Canadian, but I REALLY do like the young QE quarters made from 1953-64. I just wish they would have stuck with the .925 silver, or at least used .90 silver up until the 1960's.

I picked up a Cameo proof as the early small cents dates are so pretty

I agree on the SBA coins! What a disaster!

I'll second that. I don't know what possessed the Mint to turn out such an absolutely poor design choice (for the obverse) for the very first U.S. small dollar coin, not to mention the size being almost exactly like the quarter. I mean, how could Gasparro, the Mint engraver, be proud of THAT?

The size of the coin was legislated by Congress, and the design was heavily influenced by SBA's family. Gasparro could only do so much.

Gasparro had a completely different design in mind, which sounded much better, until politics got involved.

Canadian coinage in so many cases is so much prettier than American coinage.

@smokeriderdon, considering you and I both have an Avatar of an IHC, I think we may agree more times than we disagree.

There isn't a U.S. coin I dont like. Some more than others, yes. The SBA was failure, yes. But that has as much to do with the idiocy of the general public who wont accept a dollar coin no matter what as it does the design. But thats a different subject. It cant be helped that she was NOT an attractive woman. I LOVE Ikes and Franklins. Always have. I collect all of the coins. I have the majority of the Danscos.

Now, I WILL say I have ZERO interest in these innovation dollars or whatever they are called. Those a big dud IMO. And there are many commems and the like I detest. That God awful 9-11 thing they foisted on us for example. But I dont consider those "coins" in the same sense.

Thats what I meant when I said I disagree with you. I like them all.

Ok we may disagree. Bens and Ike's are just plain bad coins. Yuck!

But I like the innovation dollars, one set I do want to complete if modern coinage.

I'll agree with you on the Ike's, but not the Franklins.

Personally I don't let the portrait of the figure depicted turn me off from collecting any series. Let's face it, not even today's circulating coins feature the most... attractive designs, far from it. Franklins, Ikes, SBAs, they're all equally ugly to me but I collect them regardless.

In general I don't care for 20th and 21st century coins
-- EXCEPTION 1: those series that started in the 19th century (such as Indian Head cents).
-- EXCEPTION 2: my birth year set (1941)
-- EXCEPTION 3: Jefferson War Nickels
-- EXCEPTION 4: Roosevelt silver dimes

In general I don't care for long sets (Barber sets, Seated Liberty sets, Morgan dollar sets)
-- EXCEPTION: FE & IHC set
