I have a feeling that this was Feb-Mar, as written about in the Fin Post.

Just recently a 1900 Canadian Half on ebay was listed and sold on ebay, I thought that is looked like it was a fake. I contacted the submitter and asked if the coin was determined to be a China fake, could I return it for a refund. The reply to me was this "If you are concerned that it is a copy then you should not bid as the coin is being sold as is with no returns. Thus the low starting price." Does that seem fair?

I would love to hear more on this. Can you call up ICCS for validation of any of their authenticated coins on the market? Their soft slabs look so easy (and cost-effective!) to counterfeit.

That is totally unbelievable response from a seller. Low starting bid... is such a sorry excuse and use this as a disclaimer for "possibly" having sold fakes with no sense of remorse says it all! I would threaten to report to the police - actually, based on the response you got I would submit the coin to the police and report the seller. Maybe I am over-reacting.

This thread is what should be "required reading", for all collectors! The fakes that are found all over ebay, are making it tough on the ones who have some experience in detecting the coiunterfiet coins, but the young kids, and the other new collectors, all need to know this information, and one of the best ways to help, is what is being done here on this, and other sites. To those who complain about Zonad, or MM, or many others comments, and their reporting of the truth, and facts, I have only this to say, :"if the shoe fits, wear it"!..for some reason I have noticed that everyone who has made comments against the efforts to quench this influx of gaarbage from China, should remember thet it is the truth that hurts. One should try to help "clean up the mess", not try to help contaminate". My only thought in regarrd to the usefulness of the counterfiet coins, and currency, would be to gather all of it up, and when it comes time to repay the "loans" from China, that this "money" be used to repay them. sort of "tit for tat"! Just my 2centw worth. KutS; is what he said he is, some pages back: If you want a picture, (photo0 that will show every detail, he is your man. I have seen his work, and wish I had about 50 more yearts to practice. maybe I would be just half as good, by then! Keep up the good work Kurt! Dick

Quote: Care to explain this little comment? If there wasn't some type of "personal attack" (...) Dino, I am so happy to see you around still! but reading this thread woke up the devil... But now that time has passed and things have changed for the better, I do care to explain. And I owe this to moderators. This little -- yet important comment was meant to illustrate the situation and taken in context at that time, this was snag towards a tacit, complacent attitude towards a little recognizable members who just wanted to stir up the crowd. This was a personal attack towards the forum -- and moderators for not taking action. Implying that collector coins are on the same level as fake coins was not acceptable. Riding the horse of "freedom of speech" just got beyond the point of normalcy and only until recently this was never acknowledged. Now that we have a segregated platform -- the NCLT forum, hopefully more profound and civilized debates can take place without this kind of outcome... Welcome back Dino!

@Canadian Coins: It's not your job (or mine) to make comments that illustrate "acceptable" behaviour. But we do appreciate your defense of NCLT coins.

Well, in retrospect, it was very much our job at least to openly articulate our disagreement. Had it not been that way I feel we would not be here today.

I would be careful with how this coin is handled. It is illegal, by Canadian law, to even possess such a coin. There are a few sites online with images of the coins, annotated to show the markers, why not direct our colleagues to such sites? http://www.counterfeitcoins.bc.rcmp.ca

There needs to be better information that can be shared on this topic. I have reviewed both the RCMP and the Canadian Coin Ref Site and while the information there is good... if what I am hearing here and elsewhere... that the counterfeiters are getting better at what they are doing and the coins are more realistic it seems both of these sites seem to be out of date. The dealer that sent me the fake 1870 FB 5 cent is an expert in Swiss Thalers and they told me that the recent fake versions they have seen are nearly perfect except for the font on the edge lettering and a few other minor differences under 20x magnification. If the fakes are getting that good.. better education and more information exchange on what is out there including weights etc is needed and it needs to be more up to date than what we appear to have.

I can't disagree that we need better data.
I have to wonder how much these uncountable fakes are driving down prices and harming the hobby.

You may be right Glenn. Don't know if this would have anything to do with it.
In Canada, it is an offence to possess, make, and utter foreign counterfeit currency, including U.S. notes.
The offence of making counterfeits is committed, whether the note is finished or not.
A stamp "replica" on legal tender currency does not negate the offence, as the offence of counterfeiting would have already been completed. (Bank of Canada)
You should be the expert on this situation.

For what it is worth...... I have seen a few of the Canadian 1990 fake loonie. The loons duck bill is slightly detached from the body, and the waves in the water are different. I used to work with the public (and with cash) and we were advised what to look for. Easy to spot once you know. Yes, that was back in 1990. I can easy spot one of these once you know what to look for.
