Some sort of discoloration running downwards from the arrow heads through the field and across the wreath and beyond onto the L A R of the Dollar denomination. Looks almost like a spill of some sort? But for this I would easily give if a 66. The fields are pristine and yes the cheek scratches are quite prominent but the rest of the coin almost makes up for it. Eye appeal is excellent.

I can't get over the scuffed cheek. But the frostiness is fantastic. I'm still at MS64 because of that rash, but it might be a better 64 than many others.

Should not grade these from my phone screen! I'll drop to 65. Still love it.

Scuffed cheek makes it a 64+ I think.

I replied with some information on GSA CC Dollars some time ago. I found the reply and thought many readers might be interested. Here is the link. Enjoy. http://goccf.com/t/341095

I'm at 64+ to 65. The placement of the scuff on the check is going to hurt the grade.

I grade uncirculated coins using a formula found in the book "How to Grade U.S. Coins" by James Halperin, and comparison to that of previously slabbed examples from PCGS and NGC. Still this is hard to judge accurately simply from pictures. My assessment of the surface preservation is 4.5 out of 5. This comprises the bulk of the overall grade and that number gets multiplied by 2 which equals a "9". Secondly I look at the strike. The obverse appears to have slight weakness especially in the hair detail above the forehead which leaves me to give it a 4 out of 5. The luster is hard to discern from a photo but I also give this a 4 out of 5 and finally for eye appeal, The cheek rash is to be expected on these large heavy coins, the fields are quite pleasing and I give it a 4 out of 5 for eye appeal. Totaled up this comes to 21. According to this standard a 21 would put it at MS65. The reverse may be slightly better at MS66 but I think the net grade is MS65 in my opinion. Of course seeing it first hand may sway opinion. Congrats on an exceptional coin.

Scruffiness hurts it. Even the GSA graders saw the problems back in the 1970's and relegated the coin to the mixed CC $15 category.

Still a nice coin. I think it would grade 64+ in today's grading world.

Low end of MS-65. Would be a monster without that one small scuff. Important to understand that collectors buy the coin, not the holder or the technical grade. This one has a lot going for it that could boost the price. Wouldn't surprise me to see it grade out at 65 but command 66 money in the marketplace.

Funny that little bit of toning kept this coin out of an Uncirculated holder
