"You must be a Clemson fan?"

I used to live in SC, and when I was young, I kept ever $2 that I ever came across. Naturally, I had a lot of notes with the tiger paws.

But a few years later when I revisited them, I thought I myself put the stamps on! I wanted to kick myself for marking the notes! But then I read that they were Clemson $2s and it was all OK...

@jbuck- that's interesting. I've been living in the Charleston area for 10 years now, and this is the first I've heard of it!

I tried spending some Kennedy half dollars a few times last year... 2 out of 3 times, the cashier thought they were "those new dollar coins", and I had to correct her. I gave up on them after that.

On a vaguely related note- I also try asking bank tellers for "any of those old, larger-sized dollar coins". Best response I've gotten was "What, you mean them ol' ball-headed dollas?" It actually took me a couple seconds to realize she was talking about Ikes. I managed to agree politely instead of laughing.

That is a funny story! I have never marked them myself, but I have quite a few of them that I have saved over the years. One of my tailgate buddies distributes them to us before the bowl games. It is always fun to spend them during the game; and even funnier when fans of the other team get them back as change!

It is probably more common knowledge in the upstate. BTW, I love Charleston; I will be back down there in a month or two!

Within the past week I have used Kennedy half dollars, Two Dollar Bills, and Harrison Presidential dollars to pay bills.

The usual clerk reaction is to look at the money for a few seconds, and then proceed.

It's as though they need a few seconds to process the new experience, and then continue on so as not to look dumb.

I bet when you spend a JFK or An SBA or an IKE that people think they are silver

I've gotten this reaction with the new Pres Dollars a few times. One guy thought they were Chuck E. Cheese tokens.

I too regularly spend halves and dollar coins...usually at Dunkin Donuts. Like the rest of you the looks I get are sometimes priceless!

Ever since I started getting rolls of half dollars to search from my credit union, instead of bringing the 1970 and later dollars back, I spend them. It's neat seeing the looks on people's faces when I pay with them. Usually there is a response like "I haven't seen these in years!"

I hope you're not spending the 1970 Half dollars !.....because THEY ARE SILVER !!......

Some years ago I started to use Half Dollars to get in to a flea market. At first I was looked at as if I was a criminal. Now the people at the gate wait for me to pull one out and if there are more than one there, they fight over it as if it were Gold.
As to those baby sized dollars. I will never use one again.
At a local restaurant I left several for a tip. As we walked away from the table the waitress said rather loudly "Sir, you left some of your kids play money on the table"
After that, never again with those things.

I would have said 'thank you' and gone back after the play money.

What did you do carl?

I went to a family dollar today on the way fishing. bought a bottled water and a bag of chips. Handed the guy 5 half dollars. He said how much are these worth. I smiled and said 50 cent. Crossed the street and handed a guy a 5 dollar bill and two50 cent pieces at a bait shop and he paused for 5 seconds and I said they are 50 cent pieces. AHHh the fun!

One time I went to the grocery store and spent 10 halves, and the clerk thought they were $5 coins. While the extra $45 would have been nice, I had to correct her.

I find absolutely amazing that so many people do not know what their own countries money looks like. This is fascinating.

I guess it will get worse as countries put more and more designs on currently circulating coins.

For this very reason I doubt they will change the design of the obverse of the quarter. No one will know what it is any more!

And this is precisely why you guys can't get a dollar coin that will circulate.

It's okay, I have the same problem up here with nickel dollars and fifty cent pieces -- even with bank tellers.

I had a cashier in a computer store call his manager to verify my Presidential dollar. That's actually the only time I've had a 'problem' spending a Presidential, even the teenage cashiers at McDonald's take them with no drama.

The age of the cashier does factor into their acceptance of 'odd denominations'. If the cashier is over 40, they'll take your JFK's, Ike's and $2 bills without any fuss, just like they take any other money (but they might buy them out of their drawer after you leave!).
