Good advice, return it if you can. Commems is certainly correct, but I find this sort of toning quite detracting from a 70 coin. to the CCF!

Thank you for your quick response. Do you suppose the blemish was there when the coin was originally graded and encapsulated? What about the dot? And will this spread out further on the coin eventually? If so, could the MS 70 grading be downgraded? Sorry for all the newbie questions. You guys are great

Sarah, Few things come to mind viewing your American Silver Eagle: First, The coin or Bullion ASE shown has that Dot, Thats what I am focused on because what Ever it is, it does NOT look good, Almost like the " goldish tone looking " Total area was impacted or an " event " took place. Maybe during it's pre-slab life, someone sneezed, Human handling, ? The goldish area Would seem fine, if Not for that Necrotic Dot. Slabs are " suppose " to be air-tite, IMO, it would not take much for Saliva, Oily finger-prints etc to show up, down the road..... Maybe a Crisper, Closer photo of the Area, Thanks for sharing, Best Wishes, MD

Quote: Do you suppose the blemish was there when the coin was originally graded and encapsulated? Possibly. As I mentioned before, toning is not a show-stopper when a third-party service grades a coin. Quote: What about the dot? Difficult to know for certain - especially from images (vs. in-hand inspection). Quote: And will this spread out further on the coin eventually? Difficult to know for certain - especially from images (vs. in-hand inspection). Quote: If so, could the MS 70 grading be downgraded? If the dot grows significantly and/or proves to be corrosive, "Yes," the grade could possibly be lowered if resubmitted for grading. Quote: Sorry for all the newbie questions. No worries. Folks often come to CCF because they have questions!

Your eyes will go straight to that spot everytime you look at the coin. I'd definitely return it.

That dot sure looks like organic material starting to cause issues. I would request a replacement. Makes one wonder if the mint and NGC teamed up to get rid of all the bullion returns that the mint honored.

Some one working at NGC on those NiceGang Era 8 Privy slabs didn't care. . .The OP indicated she earned the Eagle by gaming. . .it has been in a slab less than 3 months.
I would try to get a replacement, especially if funds were expended to get it.

Sarah, Thanks for the added picture. Great Job.. Your Newest picture shows Another Clearer Necrotic or Blackened spot on the Left Leg of the Letter A....... Apparently the first picture has it too, just out of Focus, Same Problem . Have I seen Many slabbed coins with Unrealistic grades, Certainly. Does a Slabbed coin Guarantee the grade, Certainly Not... Do slabbed coins tone over time, Certainly. Best Wishes....

Hi Sarah, Something definitely going on with the coin. Can you post a picture of the obverse and reverse of the entire coin and slab?

Hi Sarah, Thank you for posting the pics. This is a "problem coin" graded MS70. As this is the special privy marked ASE, and has just recently been released and incapsulated, it is somewhat unique. The coin is a marketing deal between the US Mint and the gaming company. I would contact NGC and the game company and let them know this is not an appropriate evaluation of the coin. In addition, I checked the certification number on the NGC site and nothing came up, odd.

It is possible that the 'dot' is a carbon spot that can form on some silver coins.

Quote: MS70 can have slight imperfections. While true, this bothers me still. MS-70 was only theoretical for so long. I still cannot tell MS-70 from MS-69, the former should not exist.
