A rather interesting example.

I agree, interesting example. I trust Brand's assessment.

Since I scour Jefferson nickels for varieties, I had also noticed that obverse enhancement on 1943 nickels. The ribbon and ponytail ends are a common place to fade on 1938-1942 proof dies, and there are several re-engraved proof dies to retouch that fading. When I first noticed it, I thought it might be a neat re-engraved business strike die, but after going through the PCGS image database, I realized that the retouching appears on most (if not all) War Nickels for certain years and mintmarks.

Corrected: 1938-1942 proof dies

Just so it doesn't get lost: that mint mark doubling certainly resembles a shallow repunch. I found nothing on Variety Vista or Wexler. It could be MD sheared off a deeply punched mintmark, but it looks delicate yet sharply defined. I would say it looks like D/D east repunched marks from 1944 and 1945, enough that I would investigate it further.

Maybe we could get an image of BUS above the mint mark, to see if there is MD/DDD evidence on the letters above the D?

I'm no expert on new RPMs, but I've cherrypicked a few known RPMs on War Nickels. You should get an opinion from someone like rpmsrpms.

Thanks again. There doesn't appear to be any MD or DDD in PLURIBUS .

MD can and will affect only one device on up to all of them.

Boy, that really doesn't look like MD to me. And it's running in the wrong direction for DDD. That coin looks borderline EDS/MDS, there isn't even radial flow yet.

One option that occurs to me is Brian's Variety Coins. Brian Ribar maintains the Wexler catalog for Jefferson nickel doubled dies, but he will examine and attribute RPMs and other varieties. His rates are super reasonable at $5 per coin.

The main Wexler catalog team is accepting submissions for some denominations. They handle the nickel RPM catalog, but I have no idea what they are currently accepting, how big of a backlog exists, or what their pricing might be.

I agree with Cujohn on the isolated MD on the mm. Fantastic work on the rest of this though, Brand!

I don't believe variety vista uses SSL/TLS

I click one of Brand's links (or anyone's links to variety vista) and make them work...

While the URL is in the address bar spinning and trying to locate the domain, I remove the "s" from "https" : "//" "www. varietyvista . com/." to make it "http" : "//" "www. varietyvista . com/."
Than hit the enter key on my keyboard and it loads right up

Thanks everybody for a fantastic discussion of this nickel. I think Brandmeister must have been born with a silver nickel in his mouth.

Thanks, Jeff. I did get it to work with what you said but don't understand most of what you told me, just get rid of the "s". I don't understand most computer gobbledygook.

Brand, I understand what you mean, many listings look similar to MD and maybe it is an RPM but still think it is MD in this case. You would know better, as you do deal with them much more than me, it's just an occasional change up for me.
