Quote: Is there something that makes you think the initials are different? I would have just assumed that they are part of the master hub, and therefore identical on cents struck at all branches. Quote: But I don't know that. Same.

Since 1909 VDB cents are plentiful and inexpensive, I expect almost all fake S-VDB cents are produced by adding an S mintmark to the Philly coin. Adding the VDB to a 1909-S would require a lot more work, plus the host coin would be more expensive.

The V.D.B. actually are different on the Philly and San Francisco Mint issues. It is one of the best ways to determine whether the coin is an added mintmark or not. The difference is in the period locations.

There are several indicators for a real 09s VDB. The "s" mintmark should have a dot in it The center line in the B of VDB should slope to the left at almost 45 degrees There are charts you can look up that show the correct placement of the "S". There are 4 correct alignments.

As Jacrispies mentions, the dot centered between the D and B is one diagnostic of a genuine S V.D.B. The die chip (lump) in the upper loop of the S is another as well as the "Shallow" N in UNITED. Here is a link with genuine diagnostics and the 4 known MM positions for a genuine coin. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/ho...gle_vignette

Question: Is the shallow N only on the 09-S-VDB?.. or is it on other wheat cents as well?

Quote: Is the shallow N only on the 09-S-VDB?.. or is it on other wheat cents as well? Yes and yes. It IS only on the VDB-S. And it is also on the 1909-S (Both shallow and deep N's are on the 09-S)

I asked in this board a couple years ago why the VDB is so badly centered, some great replies in there if anyone's interested.

Quote: The "s" mintmark should have a dot in it Some interesting info from NGC: " the mintmark on a genuine example has a small raised dot inside of the top curve of the "S". This dot is a common characteristic seen in the mintmarks on all 1909-1916 "S" Lincoln Cents and is a great first step in authenticating a 1909-S VDB. The notch is very well defined on some examples, but it is often not as strong on others, so the lack of this dot is, by itself, not a reason to condemn a coin as counterfeit."

So the 1909-S VDB has only the shallow N on the reverse. All other 1909 Lincoln Cents have either/or shallow and deep Ns. And I'm guessing after 1909 then all Wheat Cents had the deep N. so the #4 coin would be some variety of a 1909. Then the other 4 could be anything except a 1909-S VDB.

Pick a best guess date, mint mark and VDB for each of the five coins above.
