Well from those pictures I would say MS63 PL, I would say double date marks. Very nice!

in hand is that 188 in the date that much doubled or is that a picture anomoly? if the 188 is doubled it could possibly be a VAM-34 but I cant really make out the doubling good enough from the pictures to make a positive assesment on it. There are 51 VAM's for the 1881-S in the book and over half of those are double dates so a real close and clear picture of the date would be needed to attribute which VAM it actually was

Are we sure that's not just an optical illusion from the microscope? Is this visible using a regular magnifying glass?

I can see it with my eyes by themself, however the double dont look raised at all. All the pictures, from the scanner, digital camrea, and microscope pick this up. Any Clues? Maybe I should move this to the error section?

I believe that is an effect that is seen on a toned coin. When the coin is stamped, the metal is forced into the dies, that makes the metal that is stretched tone at a different rate than the surrounding area. It looks like doubling, but is just different toning in those areas.

I have a couple Morgans that have date marks like that also. If I had to try and describe it,it looks like the numbers have slid up 1/16" leaving a mirror image behind.

I see the grade as MS63 with a possible PL reverse. Very pretty coin. The date issue should not hurt the grade at all.

If you own a Morgan, you have a VAM. Every Morgan has a VAM #, it is a die marriage. It's just that some VAMs are better and easier to spot than others If you haven't been to http://www.ashmore.com/vamupdate/index.htmspend some time there. Click on the "images" link, and sit back. There are hundreds of images for you to look at and enjoy, your coin might even be represented there.

Tim, it's a little too bright of an image to tell for certain, but I'd guess MS-62 or MS-63 based on the images. There seems to be a lot of bag marks on the obverse fields and on Liberty's face which would keep the grade down. The camera may also be exaggerating the marks.
My usual disclaimer: I haven't looked at the other responses yet.

Tim, based on your follow-up images, I'd still say MS-62 or -63. It's a very pretty Morgan (well, ALL Morgans are pretty!) but the obverse marks will keep her grade down. Bryan's the VAM expert, so I'll defer to his judgement on its status as a VAM. Are you planning to get it slabbed? Fred

I was thinking of it, but I am not sure if it would be worth the money. Red Book shows a MS63 as $50.00 and a MS64 as $70.00. I want to thank everyone for the opinions Tim
