i have a complete set from 1965 to 1986 and from 1988 to 2004. I found a roll that was filled with proofs and silver proofs (and even included a 1970-d) I have been unsuccessful at pulling a 1987 out of circulation. I have so much fun I will probably start a new collection. I think I paid $10 dollars on a few halves. and paid 7 for two folders. I will probably get an album with proofs and silver proofs for my second collection.

This is what I decided to do......and am doing. My album contains all Uncirculated, Proof, and Silver Proofs, (and it is SOOO beautiful!!).......I think maybe I'm about 80% complete now. I might do a "circulated" P&D only album or folder someday, in fact, I really want to, but I have this POWERFUL urge to "upgrade" everything I can all the time !! And these Kennedys being reletively inexpensive from the coin shop, makes it so easy to do it ! ....

You might also want to check out the thread entitled:
JFK Half Dollar Roll Hunters: Silver, proofs and other finds
I gave up reading it since reading about all the finds makes me homesick for the states since you can't find old or interesting stuff by searching like that in the UK.

I would say that, based on my many years of searching, you will need to go through thousands of dollars to get a circulation set and you still might be a few coins shy of completing a 1971-2000 (minus 87 P & D). Many times, I have gone through $500 worth and gotten no 78 or 78D and some of the mid 80s are also very hard. And most of those will be in low grade.
Tough dates include 78, 78D, 82 P & D, 85 P & D, 86 P & D, 88P, 90P. I'm working on a roll set for about 5 years now and I still need 85P, 86P, 88P (this one has proven to be most difficult for me, still need 5!), 90P.
Good luck and as you search I hope you find some rare proofs or sivler pieces or some of the 2002-present pieces.
And as mentioned above the 70D is pretty difficult from circulation, as are 87 P & D and then 2001P, 2002-P & D to present are also difficult but not impossible.

I got 3 rolls at the bank last Friday and I did pretty well for early dates. One of the rolls had about half the coins with a bunch of this gummy grunge on them. If I can figure out how to clean 'em up the surfaces looks great! The dates for all the rolls went from 70's to 80's with a few 90's scattered in. It really doesn't look like there is a lot of interest in Kennedy halves around here (makes me happy!). There was a couple of 2000's but they were SO scratched up I figure they were slot machine coins. (We have a casino about 30 miles away) Between the ones I already had and the 2 rolls I now have the 78D, 82P, 85P, 86P & D covered. I am going to try my luck for a few more rolls before I panick and hit the coin store. LOL

I started with a bunch I had hoarded over the years (from change, and the kids) but I built a lot of my set by simply roll-searching when I could get them from the bank. I did purchase a few. The 70-D I got by breaking a mint set apart (only $6 for the set). I will probably do the same for the 87's. Just a couple from the 90's and I'll be done. Then I'll start to work on the proofs.

I have been building a set from circulation for about a year now. I still need alot of the "S" along with some P&D's, and most of the Silvers. I have also bought some from members on this forum. I just buy 8-10 rolls at a time and look through them, last time I found one I needed. Gets a little old seeing the same years over and over, but thats coin collecting for you.

If I focused on actually building a collection with any grade coin, I would have gotten pretty close to finishing I think. I've gone through easily $25,000 worth of halves and have managed to snag 2010 P&D - 1991 P&D in all BU/AU condition (missing about 4?). Haven't come across any earlier dates that are close enough to my standard. LoL WOO 100 posts!

ken, you're the first person that I've heard use the term "impaired proofs". Usually people call 'em "proofs found in circulation" but impaired is a good descriptive term -- I guess I am an impaired collector. :-)

That sounds almost exactly like my story. I think I will keep trying the roll searching method until I get to the point of finding none in a batch then switch over to buying from a dealer or maybe trading with a few members of the forum (hopefully).

Oh no.... there is no hope for me now. I am probably going to be taking ALL my extra cash and buy Kennedy Halfs. I just stopped off at my neighborhood branch and got the only 12 JFK's they had and low and behold there was TWO 1989S proofs in the bunch. Yeeeeeee haaaaaaaa! Had to fix the date I posted.....

when I started searching I went a hobby store and bought the 2 Lincoln Penny folders the 3 Jefferson nickel folders I needed more since my collection expanded and I bought these the next time all folders JFK folders (64-03ish) dimes (65-04ish) Presidential dollars the first album SBA and Ike dollarsI also had a State Quarters P ad D folder from before I collected I got it from family I would say that all of these coins are easy enough to find and fill I mean you may not get all of the pennies but other then that I dont see it as all that difficult to get a date and mint mark set of all the circulation strike coins that you regularly see in pocket change (licolns, jeffs, roosies, JFK's) even the silver Roosevelt dimes are doable I'm working on them strictly from circulation and they are very fun This hobby is great for all people I hate spending money so this hobby suits me as everything I have I have gained from circulation it can also be fun for people who like to spend if you have the money you can have anything you want I think buying is cheating tho :) have fun with the JFK's I think I'm only missing 6 or 7 oof them up until '03

OK, my experience thus far for getting my Kennedy half (P&D) folder filled has been as follows: I have searched 25 rolls and gotten a few loose coins from tellers that had no rolls. I have all the coins except 16 to finish the book from 1964 to 2002. In the process (which has been ablast!) I have also gathered in 86 - 40% silver halves and 2 - NIFC proofs. I think this is the most fun I have ever had while trying to fill a book. Maybe I can trade out a few of the 40% silver halves and get some of the others I need. Some of the 40% halves look really nice.
