tone down the light a little, its hard to grade with that much light on the coin because the light will hide marks. The Reverse looks good but not so sure about the Obverse. I am guessing MS-65 but would have to have a better picture before I would commit to that grade because it looks like there is some hits there on the chin and a few other places the lighting is hiding

I can't see the luster in these photos and the lighting may not fully reveal the scuff marks on Liberty's jaw and neck. Details in the hair seem a bit weak but based on the excellent feather detail on the eagle the coin certainly looks mint state.
In terms of contact marks it does look like a candidate for MS-64 or better. If the luster quality meets that grade level and there are no cleaning or PCGS "altered surfaces" issues it should be worth investing a grading fee. Retail for the 1887-S in MS-64 is about $700.

Nice strong reverse strike, would like to see a little better picture of the obverse. I'm going to say MS-64 for now.

NCC first, to remove the spots and maybe the surface haze. Looks like some PL action there, which would triple the value.

To all, thanks for the objective reviews and photo suggestions. I used existing sunlight. I will try tomorrow for new pics as I do not arrive home until dark.  I am not sure what the VAM 2A(Hot 100) does to the value. That was the original reason I picked it up. |

ANACS have been off as of late. They even body bagged a 1909s wheat that I sent to them. They said it was an altered surface even though it belonged to my grandfather that he got in 1910. It has been stored away since then. Easily an AU50.
I know that ANACS is the most strict graders of the 3 but it does surprise me that yours just went for that. Wonder if it was because of the hair above the ear?

I have to assume there is an issue with the luster. Most BU San Francisco Morgans will have strong cartwheel luster with sharp luster bands visible as you tilt the coin under a point source of light (incandescent or halogen desk lamp, for example). If your coin has been excessively dipped the luster will be impaired and the cartwheel and luster-band effects will be muted. That could be why ANACS graded this dollar so low.

Is worthy of the slab!  ---That is a beautiful example of a Morgan dollar. ---I'm not a grader but would have thought better that MS61.  ---That's a pretty hard nosed grade! ---My opinion humble as it is amid all yours.

61 thats horrible. I would almost say sent to ngc or pcgs but thats more $'s
