Hmm...is there something wonky about the lettering on LIBERTY, or are my eyes playing tricks?  Update: I thought the "R" in LIBERTY looked odd, but it appears to match the S-3. Still...I would only buy this coin slabbed or from an early copper expert.  The ebay coin is also consistent with the S-3's fraction on the reverse:  Edited by DVCollector

The seller lends some credibility that its legit but unless I knew the coins diagnostics well I would not bid on it. If I had that kind of money to spend on a cent like that I would deal with someone or a company that specializes in that coin.

I thought immediately that this was an electrotype...I am probably wrong, but I would never touch anything like that raw unless I really knew what I was doing. Pouring over thousands of 1800s silver coins has made me feel safe bidding on expensive silver since I will authenticate after the fact and send it back if its fake (and I can spot the majority of fakes, pointed them out to unaware sellers many times) but not copper and certainly not in the $10000 range. Actually, I wouldn't touch anything like this period, because I don't have much faith in TPGs anyway, fake slabs circulating, etc.

I was watching this one carefully and I never doubted its authenticity. I looked at it closely and it looks every bit legit to me. I'd buy it raw all day long (had I stashed away that many shekels) - not sure if I'd buy it from this seller. Not a bad seller, but a coin like this I'd prefer to get from one of the big copper dealers as they usually guarantee authenticity for life, et cetera - and they have a lot more to lose if something goes wrong.
Anyway, this is a chain in the VF range - REALLY nice surfaces for a chain (could net VF to the right person) and that's a GREAT buy. It's easily worth twice that much to the serious copper collector.

Something like this kind of money is chancy on e-Bay particularly from a seller that isn't known for dealing in early American Coppers. Getting it authenticated by an expert and not necessarily from a major TPG is a good idea. |

I wonder if the purchaser will come through with the money? I'd be very leery of spending a lot of money for a coin on ebay, especially that much. |

with Vermont... If you play with fire like that, you're bound to get burnt... That said, if you have money like that, why wouldn't you buy a graded example?
