Found this cent in a dealer box at our local coin show last weekend. They labeled it as a "1908 AU-58" with a marked price of $28 (and they wouldn't bargain). I was still a willing buyer at that price. Comments?

well at 28 Bucks that was a Steal! Its the 08 S, Mintage of 1.115 million...Very hard to come by and yours is in great condition, I can see all 4 diamonds.
I'd Gladly Pay 28$ for that...I see much worse ones at Shops for double that
Rest in Peace

Nice pick!

I'll admit I didn't notice the "S" at first glance. The surfaces look like they've been messed with unfortunately, but you still got a steal!

You definitely got a lucky pickup. As mentioned previously, those surfaces have definitely been altered and would it never get in a "good" slab.

What has been done to the surface of the coin, exactly?

Improperly cleaned; unnatural color.

the coin is too bright so the patina has been cleaned off. The coin was probably originally the color of the dark spots.

I think I will try to avoid coins that have been cleaned. I also looked at the results of various low value coins to see the effects of cleaning. But yeah, that is a nice Indian Head cent. I have one that is severely damaged, 1907.
