I recently purchased a coin identified on ebay as a Constantine I AE Follis. No further information was provided beyond the images. These images showed a coin that was devoid of any patina and attributable to Constantine II. It had an interesting campgate reverse so I got it at a low bid. I knew from the images the coin was a Constantine II AE Follis.

The coin arrived today and I was more than pleasantly surprised by the very nice layer of patina. I have the coin identified as an AE Follis, RIC VII 216, struck at Siscia 328-9 AD:

OBV: CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C, laureate head right
REV: PROVIDENTIAE CAESS, campgate with two turrets, star above, epsilon SIS (double crescent) in ex.

The first set of images are the seller's while the second are the ones I just took a few minutes ago.

Nice example - looks like the seller used a poor quality scanner, bad for him and good for you for!

JW, which seller did you get this from? I think I bought a coin from the same guy a while back and the pictures were like the ones he gave above. When I got the coin I was impressed that it was actually that nice. Good score!

The seller was in Jerusalem, Israel. I have only purchased a couple of coins from Israel, but I have been pleased with them all. I have one other coming from Israel, but it takes a long time in shipping. Thanks for the comments. The coin is very nice in hand

The detail definitely is much better in the second photo, but I'm wondering about the color.

Did the better lighting over-power the color of the coin.

Does it have a brownish, greenish, blackish or silver like appearance?

The first pic looks to be a greenish brown color.

I've seen a big-time seller of ancients on ebay from Israel, but I never really wanted to purchase from them since they are so far away. That may change now though.

We should pool our knowledge and put together a list of recommended dealers.
I know that JW has one, and I can recommend a few more--not on ebay, but Vcoins.

The image of the reverse is most like that of the actual coin. On the obverse, the lighting was too much as you can see and I should retake the photo. But for accuracy of color, the second is closest.

For some of you, I have provided a list of my favorite sellers. This list probably needs some updating, but I am more than happy to share this list with anyone interested.

I have a few trusted dealers that I wouldn't mind sharing.

Sweet JW! I too have some coins coming from Israel. Probably the same seller as it takes a long time to ship. He has to go to the ancient item authority or something like that to get a permit to send it. Been waiting over three weeks. Looking forward to them though.
