Thank you so much for showing the differences in these coins to us. I have to admit that I would have been fooled.

I agree, the rim and edges are a clue. The color of the coin appears to be a poor silver. The asain fakes always have a different hue to the color of the coin, even if it is true silver. I wonder if the US mints use a coloring or bleaching process for the silver!

Geeze! That was amazing to see. That's why ebay scares me. I don't think I would spend more than $20 on any coin because I'm not good enough to tell the difference, especially with good ones like these out there. Caveat Emptor.

When it comes to fakes, I have just been trolling through an auction catalogue where there a quite a few lots of fake coins, with 20 to 100 fake coins in each lot, which are being auctioned as fakes. The U.S. silver dollar fakes are estimated at around $5 each, and appear to be about as good as the one discussed here.

They are touted as being good for a reference collection for comparison purposes.

You'd think that if they went to all that trouble to copy it, they'd do it at 100% scaling.

I can't understand why they did not do it perfect. They obviously have the capability. Of course I also know none of the process they use to produce these coins. I have other denomination fakes which are definitly cast and the pitting gives them away. But I also know that Big Tree was using dies to punch their coins - there were pics of this online before.

That copy is actually pretty good. Who knows...maybe I'd be duped when seeing that coin in hand.

@doug3333 - Gotta love the "legitimate replica manufacturers" over in China nowadays, eh?

The scary thing is that every year they're getting better, but the scarier thing is that even the crap fakes STILL pass genuine more often than not. :-)
