Mean Bank Tellers And Store Associates

That is what I do! But I have the luxury of not only having a large number of banks within a short radius of home, but also having a job where I drive to many local towns; hence giving me regular access to hundreds of different banks. In all of the time I have roll searched (a number of years) I can count on one hand the number of times I've heard of tellers sifting through rolls looking for coins. Now, old bills and loose silver (mostly half dollars)? TOTALLY different story; the majority of branches have somebody behind the counter that holds on to those. But what I read above is correct; tellers can get in a lot of trouble for sitting there during the times that there is nothing to do opening up rolls.

I was piled on by members of another forum, for mentioning the unthinkable, "banks are not coin shops". Over the years I have bought silver rolls from tellers at face value, and have paid many times face for other similar coins on the line, with bank manager watching. Anything goes. It may not be ethical, but I don't set the roll hunting rules.

I would like to respectively disagree with you. A bank is not a coinstore. A bank is a bank. And one of the services they provide is exchanging money, which includes boxes and bags of coin. If you as an employee can't can't handle it, then arrangements need to be made or you may need to find a different job. But it IS part of your job and you don't have, nor should you have the ability to cut anyone off, regardless the amount. If bank management decides they want to charge a fee or stop offering a service...that's there option as a bank.

Let me be clear that I'm not advising people should be buying and dumping any certain amount of coins. You should be respectful of the situation, those involved, and the hobby. But I know exactly what others are talking about with these lazy tellers that act like your asking them to move mountains when you ask for a box of coin or certain type of coins

Back on topic...I believe the tellers that get an attitude or say "I keep all of XXX coins because they don't like when collectors come in and snatch them from uninterested or uniformed tellers before the collecting teller gets her hands on them. Imagine how many times that teller has overheard someone next to her ask for and receive coins that she would have liked to look at or own.

You're pretty wrong there Owaassokie, banks don't have to exchange a thing for you they just have to make your money available. How they give you the money is upto the bank, they don't need to take requests, most will try to give you what you want to make you happy but by no means do they have to. As you said a bank is not a coinstore it's a bank and they will give you what they want to give you.

Some banks will differentiate businesses from people. They may do some things for business accounts (order coins and accept coin dumps) that they will not do for personal accounts.

The banks here will sell me rolls and all but one teller (so far) was willing to look through her nickel drawer when I was looking for nickels (I just bought everything with a pre-2006 face). Even the post office clerks were willing to look for old nickels for me. But I never asked for more than $1 worth of old nickels at a time and only went to the bank about once a week when I was doing other business. Returning coins has to be rolled or taken to the coin counting room (open two days a week, I think) where they dump loose coins into a counter/sorter machine. Sure would be nice to go through THOSE bags!

I guess my first question would be: Is this your bank? Do you have accounts there? If not, then YOU ARE NOT A CUSTOMER! Changing some money for a different type of money, at face value, does not make you a customer of that bank. So you shouldn't expect "great customer service", for you are not a customer. I understand the coin roll hunting mentality, did it myself for awhile (not on a large scale, and not primarily looking for silver) and my bank (yep, the one I have accounts at) was more than accommodating. If you have accounts there, and you get what you pay for, then consider it a bonus that you can get and return the coins you want. But to complain about getting "rude treatment" (which by the way, I believe sighing and saying "no" doesn't really qualify as) from a teller you are not dealing with on a business level (read- have accounts with) is simply ridiculous.
