aladinslamp Pillar of the Community United States 3076 Posts	Posted 08/29/2012 01:13 am There is much interest in the old glass lenses, where threads like "EL Cheapo Lenses"... Truly lend some great info to some of the "BEST QUALITY OLD GLASS", left behind due to technology.... and lack of the ability to connect our old lenses and AUTO USE with our new camera gear... We are looking at MACRO coin shooting, so in general..We are not trying to buy the $400 plus dollar Macro lenses for our camera, but rather the $20-$50 macro lens, of yester year....or I would say, Enlarging lenses used for film development.. with a bellows for our Maccro results... One of the first things to remember, most of these lenses are enlargeing lenses for camera film development that were made to really be sharp for the "Photo Finish" or your in hand finished pictures of "developed negatives" Pictures in hand... your finished pictures... THE thing is, with many a camera's /manufacturers that this general public has.... Here is the meat...of what we are doing today.... We here are using the quality of old glass and bellows to be able to do macro and EXTREME macro photography for coin shooting.... Now, some use Canon, some use Nikon, some use Pentax. ect... My question is, when using or looking for a bellows, What is the easiest format for a bellows to convert to any camera manufacturer.... Would it me M42 screw? Canon CD,,,, Nikon AI ? MY reason/question is because of the lenses and there type/mount and its ease of adaptability or conversion to your platform... What is the easiest..as I know adapters are available for most platforms to SOME of these lenses...THE bellows you chose will determine much of this...M42 screw mount or Pentax and other older makes used the M42 screw which can use the M 39 older lenses as well....ECT ECT..what would be the best bellows to support the most cameras and the widest range of available old glass lenses?.... LaureateBust Valued Member Canada 331 Posts	Posted 08/29/2012 09:00 am I would have to say that m42 bellows are the winner for ease of adaptability. There seem to be cheaply obtained adapters to take you between m42 and every major proprietary bayonet mount. As a Canon EOS user I would prefer m42 for this reason. I don't even know if Canon EOS bellows exist, but if they do, the asking price will surely be several times higher than a top-notch m42 unit (from, say, Pentax). Of course, getting a solid and well-designed bellows is just as important, since (repeated) alignment with the coin is so desirable. Report this Post to the Staff

aladinslamp Pillar of the Community United States 3076 Posts	Posted 08/30/2012 03:09 am I agree, and as a Canon user, The M42 makes use of most enlarging lenses...Personally, I have the Canon FL bellows, Very well built, stable and with very fine adjustments. The only other bellows I would consider is the vivitar M42 bellows due to these same points....One of the main considerations I was looking for with a bellows is the ability to mount other lenses up to 135mm. I like the canon due to one adapter allows (M42 to Canon) all screw mounts to be used(with a step down ring) as well as ease of mounting just about any other type lens to it.. this is due to the fact that I may not find the same lens cheap with M42 as they can be a bit more expensive, but they can be found in Canon C/FD mounts or very easily adaptable to most lens mounts, with an easily cheaply priced adapter... My main concern was to "have" say 2 or 3 at max adaptable platforms.....M42 with rings allows Tokina M40 or all M39 "all makes" lenses, with the C/FD with an adapter say a Nikon, it pretty much lets me choose any lens I may be interested in, with 3 main mountings, Canon, Nikon or M42/39...Of which I can find a cheap price for the lens I may be interested in...This is due to the fact, say, early Pentax was M42, and many an Ebayer asks high prices for older Pentax named lenses,,,as well as named lenses despite that they are the same cheaper priced known lens listed under different mounts... This does give you an wonderful advantage of buying a great lenses at a great prices when you have the ability to use more than one mount.... Report this Post to the Staff
