I'm a little disappointed in this topic after seeing some of your oldest notes. I was guessing that a lot of you would have colonials but now I'm starting to figure that most collectors have only items of value rather than items with more historical value. For me, I started collecting because of the art(Educationals) and began to be fascinated by some of the history behind US currency and then older items from other countries.
But everyone has their own way to collect!!

The artwork of older large currency is what attracted me to currency collecting. That said I do prefer quality over quanity with respect to what I collect.

I'm not disappointed - I like seeing everyones oldest notes. But I think you should have asked differently for what you wanted, perhaps:"what historical notes do you have?" None of my notes are particularly historical in and of themselves, but they do have historical aspects. If you want, you can check out the link below where I humbly try to place some of the historical facts concerning notes and the people connected with them. You might find something there you like. Most are world notes, but there are several that are American colonial, obsolete, fractional, etc. mixed in. http://www.banknoteden.com/articles.htmlUnder Collections - United States, there is more U.S. info, but it is very limited in scope, meant only to stimulate the curiosity.

This is my fist attempt at loading a photo so lets see what happens. This note is my oldest. It is dated Feb 9th? 1819 and it is a script note issued by Ezra Grizwald, the founder of the town of Worthington OH. He operated a tavern there and issued his own script. Worthington notes are not paticularly rare but signed and issued examples are certainly tough. It seems that a number of notes that Ezra had ordered were stolen in shipment which is why the unsigned remainders are so common.

I have several Russian Imperial notes from the 1910s. Don't know which particular one is the oldest but several, including a 10 rouble one, have the Konshin signature, which means 1914 at the latest.

Bisonmatt...Dave L and you have some valid points.
I would NOT say that folks are only collecting high value notes. Collectors will gravitate towards what they like....sooner or later a collector is going into the high value notes (they don't know it but that's where they end up)....meaning as you expand and or narrow your focus you go into various aspects of collecting.
I started my currency collection with foreign notes and am into collecting fancy sn's, short run stars and errors. Some notes do get pricey but I do not look at it as collecting high value notes, rather does it FIT my Collection on what I am trying to accomplish.

This might have been a better topic to post in the world catagory. Ceylon - you have some good points as well and Dave is right...I was thinking and asking two different thoughts(i tend to do that) In my head I was thinking that everybody that collects should/would have at least one note from pre 1800(world or US) but now I'm starting to see that, like coins, there are more collectors that specialize in certain types and not too many that go for the "ancient" notes.

Hi Ceylon62, I have already up graded it and the battleship note so I don't really need them at this time, but I don't want to just sell them off. I would however trade them for notes on my want list. If you have anything I can use I'm sure we can do a deal. Bill Collector
