This just arrived in the mail!  I like this coin series because of the handwork on the dies and the varieties. These coins were crude because of a sea blockade against Copenhagen prevented better minting equipmennt and tools being shipped to the Kongsberg mint. This particular coin is on the heavy side--8.9gr and despite a few dings, it has nice details. The long scratches are actually marks present on the flan before striking. From what I've read, the larger mintmark is scarcer.  Edited by DVCollector

Gorgeous! Where do you find your early 20th century and older Norway coins? I'm not sure how but I have put together quite the collection of late 20th century Norway type coins and would love to go further back. Most of the coins I see on ebay are either in poor condition or ridiculously priced. |

Glad you enjoyed the coin--thanks! Williamson, I found this one on ebay...it takes a little searching. Others I find at shows. The 1811 is a lower mintage (1810: 3,448,800, 1811: 1,190,600) and I think the price was good for the detail. Windchild, I have a pdf catalogue of Norway coins that show a lot of varieties. The author distributes it for free--PM me if you want a copy.  |

Very nice, I have been looking at Norway coins, this is a very nice example as compared to the very few I have seen.

Thanks Ancientnoob--yeah, the BIN coins of this type are usually way too high. Auctions without high reserves usually close between $30-$50, depending on grade/variety. These are widely collected for varieties--this one has an interesting raised mark just below the mintmark. If anyone's interested, I'll be selling a batch of Norway coins between the late 1800s to 1930s. If you're interested, let me know and I'll PM you when they're up on CCF. Edited by DVCollector

Here's a translation of the Nordic grading system and values found in the catalogue.
0 = BU, 0/01 = UNC, 01 = gEF-AU, 1+ = gVF, 1/1+ VF 1 = F, 1- = VG, 2 = G.
For US $ values...divide by 5.7
