Philip Grierson wrote an introduction to Byzantine coins in a pamphlet, "Byzantine Coins" that the sponsoring institution, Dumbarton Oaks, lets you download freely as a pdf at:
http://www.doaks.org/resources/publ...tine-coinage

The iAnnotate app was used to add bookmarks you can use to navigate through it. You can download the bookmarked version here:
http://esty.ancients.info/Byz/byzcoins.pdf

The bookmarks don't appear in my browser. Save it (as the pdf it is) and open it as a pdf and the bookmarks will appear on the left to allow you to skip from topic to topic.

It is not an introduction for collectors, who might prefer more emphasis on the copper coins, rather an introduction for historians who will be more interested in the monetary system which depended on gold.

I downloaded the original version some time ago. The version you made makes it a lot easier to navigate. Thanks a lot!

There are two kinds of sinners in the study of ancient coins. There are people who study large medallions, Roman gold and Greek tetradrachms because they are splashy. Then there are guys like me who don't because we can't buy them and do not live within several thousand miles of a public collection that will even let someone like me see their material. We each seem to deny the other's coins exist.

Philip Grierson wrote
'Coins of Medieval Europe', covering the period of 1,000 years from the fifth century.
His research for the book covers more than 200 bibliographical references.

Probably THE best investment I have made in a numismatic book, with the highest degree of scholarly research.

Coins from this period of European history are among the most difficult to find in all of numismatics.
