I bought some dateless jewelery-grade Buffalo nickels for 50 cents each. After a soak in 25% vinegar, one (with no mint mark) is faintly showing a "25", and apparently a 1925 in the low grades is worth more than 50 cents (hooray). Will anyone buy a coin that's been soaked in vinegar, and how much is it worth if only the latter part of the date is showing? Is a partial date still worthless? How much do people actually pay for these? It's not discoloured, mind you. |

No Buffalo nickel is worthless  . No date / restored dates are going for anything from 15c to 30c. Restored dates of key dates could be worth more than that, usually fetching 10-25% of what a full date, AG coin would bring. Keep in mind - a restored date is below low grade, just under the Fr2 price tag ;). |

supgog is correct,,,no Buff is worthless.......I personally would not buy a restored date.....I believe they have a place as hole fillers or for collectors just starting.....If you happen on to a rare one,,,14/3......18/17.....You struck oil!

How do restore dates? I have a few dateless buffalo's that I would like to find the date.

I found some 25% acetic acid (it's concentrated vinegar okay) that works pretty well if you just dunk it in. You can also use Nic-a-Date, but it leaves an ugly splotch. Normal vinegar works too, but it takes longer.

I have had some restored dates and personally I don't care for them and they won't stay in my collection. But there is a market for them.

I almost bought a restored date 1914-D. All things considered, it rather looked nice, but I could not do it.

Not really, considering some of the other coins that I have accepted into my collection. Now, had this 1914-D been a weerdsteev production, it might have had a better chance!  |

I have difficulty selling restored dates. I can get 3/4 horn Buffalo nickels for 50 cents at a local dealer (common dates). You have to hunt through the large bin they have though for some different dates. I have tried to sell a 1914-D restored date myself, I wonder if it was me jbuck tried to buy it off of? I listed it briefly. It was returned though because it was part of a lot that I could not tell all coins were restored. I have a 1914s and 1918d restored that came with a lot but I am having difficulty selling those at a small percentage of the G price. My 3/4 to full horn nickels sell the easiest. I have sold some pretty ugly coins on ebay but restored dates I have issues with. I would start the bidding at 99 cents but I am afraid that is all I would get. Edited by buddy16cat

I listed a restored date 1918D at $3.60 with 50 cent shipping BIN and no sale. The G price on Numismedia is $18 and I accepted offers and no offers. Same for a 1914s with a G price of $23 and I listed it for $5.10 with shipping.
