I noticed that there is some kind of outline around the arrows and other elements on this half. I have seen this before on some graded Seated Liberty halves. Can anyone share why this appears on some coins, but not on others?

When I was in my 20's I was pretty buff. Not so much today. Same with this die. Age and use have taken away it's crispness and you can see the results.

Actually it is the other way around, this is probably a relatively new die that was incompletely or improperly basined and you are seeing Longacre doubling. Yes Longacre doubling comes on the devices too and not just the lettering. With wear and polishing the doubling becomes weaker and fades away.

Thank you for the informative response. So much to learn! Could you also share your thoughts on this shield detail? It looks like one of the shield stripes on the left side is incomplete. Could this have been caused by debris in the die, or are there other factors?
