This would appear to be a denier of Charlemagne (CAROLVS REX), and as such, one should suspect highly that it is a reproduction.

Thanks for the reply! I've had it since the 1970's. It was in a bag of my grandfather's second world war medals that my mother inherited (although I have no idea where he got it). Do you know where something like this could be verified?
