Black Toned Jefferson Nickel 1944-P

sllyonsjr421 Valued Member United States 101 Posts	Posted 07/07/2007 06:50 am I just came across this today. Its a AUish maybe low bu grade almost black 1944-P nickel. I am wondering if this is normal for the nickels to tone like that or if its possibly been altered chemically to induce that effect. I will get a pic of it up later today. Would love any info you guys have on this sort of thing. I had found something online that mentioned Black Jefferson nickels being referred to as "blackies" but I cant find anything like that anymore. I dont remember where I found that >< Anyway any info would be much appreciated, and I will get a high res pic up today of it. Steve Report this Post to the Staff

lonnie Valued Member United States 250 Posts	Posted 07/07/2007 07:39 am I've seen a ton of the silver Jefferson nickels turn black after they have been in circulation. Don't recall one ever turning black in a BU state though. When they do turn black they are some of the ugliest coins I've ever seen. A lot of dealers have these in there "junk" boxes. I got the best pics I could they still aren't showing the color quite as nicely as in hand and it doesn't show the detail in the steps on the reverse like I would like. It has 4 steps but they are hard to see in the pics. Let me know what you guys think of it. I was pretty happy to find it in a 4.99 lot of 100 nickels on ebay. Steve Report this Post to the Staff

As far as the color goes, it is fairly common to get that "gun-metal" gray color on a War Nickel but it is usually on circulated nickels, I can't say I've seen a BU before with this type of tone. I have to admit, when the post was first posted I had visions of "Black Beauty's" the proof nickels from the late 50's and early 60's and I started to get excited! Report this Post to the Staff
