These are three different steel pennies. See if you see a difference between the distance of the D and the Date.

Looks like the middle one is closer to the 4 compared to the others. Might be an error, might be just an optical illusion?

nope not an illusion ive taken high resolution pictures and looked at it. its almost touching the 1943... I dont know if its an error or what its worth.

My Cherrypicker's guide is still in the mail so I can't look it up for you to see if such a thing exists. You might have better luck with one of the error guys in the "Variety and Error Coin Forum" on this site.

Weren't some of these mintmarks on US coin punched into the die by hand? That being the case they could end up in various places.

It is not an error. Mintmarks used to be punched into the die by hand so variation in location was normal.

It is only considered an error when the MM encrouches or otherwise invades and touches another part of the design. Or if it is significantly otherwise misplaced in the field...
