Well as I stated earlier, I cancelled my auction and relisted it. I end it on Sunday at 6pm PDT so it will have a full weekend. I kept the reserve, but lowered it. Still free shipping, handling, insurance and no questions asked return policy. Hope it works.

I keep watching this over and over, and I have to wonder. If you are asking less than greysheet why are you not offering this to a dealer at full greysheet? You have paid multiple listing fees with no luck, you readily admit that your pics aren't the greatest, and yet you list it again. This makes no sense to me. Susan proudly proclaimed the sale of the 1838 Half, yet at the hammer price, this is about the same as any dealer would pay. You save the listing fees, the picture taking, the time involved, and the hassles. I know that most of the forum users keep shouting at how great ebay is, but with the exception of your blind luck in receiving the wrong coin, I just don't see it. But maybe you guys enjoy working for free. |

I think this is the issue. The pictures are BAD. I can't get a good idea of what the coin really looks like from your images. I recommend paying someone to take great pictures for you, it WILL be money well spent. I know that Bobby takes fabulous pictures, maybe you could pay him to photograph it for you. |

ND, I have to disagree with you on this one. Even Heritage was not getting this kind of money for an MS61. I will allow that the sale went as high as it did because I am sure the buyer is looking to crossover to PCGS. However as an ANACS graded MS61, dealer ask is nowhere near this amount. Greysheet ask on this coin is $1060 in MS63. This coin falls 2 grades below. I do not believe that a dealer would have paid MS63 money for this coin. Certainly it was not happening on Heritage either. |

If this auction doesn't work, I will try selling to a local dealer. Cant wait to see what they will offer.

Maybe you and I are looking at different prices. My Quarterly 2 has the 1838 listed in MS-63 at $1700.00 and that is a $50 increase over the last quarterly issue. I know that there are a ton of people who look at ebay, Heritage and some others for prices, but I use Greysheet, Teletrade, and CoinNet. |

I'm looking at Greysheet 07/22/05. Dealer Bid is $1060 and Ask is $1800 for MS63. I did get those two numbers backwards. However, since bid is what a dealer will pay for the coin to resell, why would a dealer pay MS63 ask for an MS61 coin, especially with the obverse rim nicks disclosed even though they are not visible?

Yes. Bluesheet shows PCGS and NGC MS61 at $600 with a market of $760. It is my feeling that a dealer would have hid behind greysheet on this coin possibly offering MS62 bid, but not ask. MS62 bid on this coin is $770. Keep in mind that each sale is not an island unto itself either. We got a lot of advertising and exposure from that coin that drove up the price of a number of other auctions during the time it was running. Since we are at the mercy of what our clients send us, we need to take advantage of coins such as this one to get the lower-end coins sold at reasonable prices. The difference that this coin made in the hammer prices of other coins running at the time made up for quite a chunk of the fees. Also, as stated earlier, the listing fees on this auction were negligible, the final fees and PP fees came to about $40. We did not "work for free" by any stretch of the imagination and Mike, who had speculated on this coin in the first place, made a profit. All made money (including our clients who were not connected to this coin). We learned a long time ago that each sale is just a part in the big picture. |

Susan, Susan, Susan, please picture me shaking my head.  The reason that they make quarterly 1, 2, and 3 along with the Monthly supplements is to give precise details on type coins. This is very valuable info that is a must have. You did well for ebay, I admit that readily. You know that I have a great amount of respect for your ability to navigate them waters, but for this effort and time............ it is all in what you know. Bust coins, especially Halves have a great dealer market and are going up in price every few weeks. |

But ND, I LIKE doing the auctions - putting them together, doing the description, watching the activity - these are all things that I enjoy. It is not work when the coin in question is like this 1838. Coins like this are my reward for getting through the crap auctions (and even those can be enjoyable since I like the grading and descriptions). Also, keep in mind that every auction takes a total of 5 minutes (plus 2 minutes for pics since Bobby's fast). We just made a nice chunk of change for a total of 10 minutes work (it took 3 to pack it up and ship it this morning.) Everything is very streamlined now. I know you still don't believe it, but I truly LOVE what I do and internet selling appeals to me. Putting together the presentation, analyzing the data, all of it. |

I know all too well about "giving" time for enjoyment, and I am glad that we at least see eye to eye on that.
