I must confess to a rather perverse pleasure in all of this .....

Almost worth the cost of purchase. Much more interesting (and educational !) than the standard look what I bought and the obligatory "Very nice" "excellent details" etc.

I just gave Nero a bath in acetone

Guess what ? The coin returned to the condition shown in sellers pics. Curious ......

I did apply a dab of "Blue Ribbon" coin preservative to it after it arrived but that did not change it much. And acetone is quite good at removing fake patination ie paint ! Curiouser and curiouser

Will post new pics after I devour my delicious breakfast which sits before me !

I agree TIF, I have been watching an Agrippa from a new seller on ebay, but after seeing Martins post I checked his other sells. He also has the Nero and a handful of gold. http://www.ebay.com/sch/2014nobonch..._ipg=&_from=

dwayne8625 - All his large bronzes are as fake as fake can be. The Agrippa is the same dies as those above.

TIF - I hadn't really looked at the CNG coin. Looking at it in detail I believe it to come from the same dies where they have worn the tell tale beard away. I need to do some more checking on this one.

Martin beat me to it. Yes all the large bronzes look dodgy. You only have to look at the hair.

The CNG coin is certainly from the same dies.

An acetone bath to remove the oil and like magic it returns to the original !

The coins I looked at in the previous post all had a 'fake' patina appearance. And the Agrippa screams fake ! I believe this one is also fake.
But ...... the patination is so darn real looking !

After this I just may retire from the competition.
I always felt the day would come when I could not detect fake bronze. I started to collect exclusively in bronze because I felt nervous about the 'gem' silver I was seeing being sold for big bucks away back in the 1980's. Now the bronze is selling for big bucks and the techniques of deceit are getting better everyday !

I think I will keep this one.

I live several blocks away from a highly respected school
(Worcester Polytechnic Institute). The local coin shop here is frequented by a professor whom I have discussed the subject with. This could be the ideal piece to have examined by some brilliant young minds (many of whom are foreign students who may be not unfamiliar with the topic !)

I could send it to David Sear but he would probably only confirm something we seem to be 99.99% sure of already !

So, do you know what they did to it to change it from the sellers pic to the way that you received it?

I imagine the same thing I did with it.

A dab of Blue Ribbon preservative gives most ancient bronzes a darker look. Much easier to photograph too !

Acetone will remove almost anything which has been applied to a coin.

Do you mind if I use your images to create a fake report on this coin?

Such a shame, I thought you had picked up a beauty FR - You are right though that it has made for a far more interesting than usual thread.

Barry Murphy has confirmed that the CNG coin is fake. "....looks decent in the photo, the color is pretty believable, but the style of the lettering is wrong. Glad I didn't catalog that one." He has informed CNG.
