Now that they have officially posted the set online as well as mailed out info on the set I must say I am a bit disappointed in the offering.

Quote:
The Roosevelt coins, medals and stamps are displayed in a rich green folder covered in a soft-touch material with a handsome textured look that is very gift-worthy.

The set includes:
•One proof finish 2014 Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential $1 Coin;
•One proof finish 2014 Roosevelt dime
•One Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Medal struck in .999 fine silver
•One 1 5/16" Franklin D. Roosevelt Bronze Medal
•Four U.S. postage stamps issued two months after the death of President Roosevelt since he was an avid stamp collector.
â—¦The 1-cent Roosevelt stamp "Hyde Park" depicts his beloved New York home.
â—¦The 2-cent Roosevelt stamp "Little White House" pays tribute to the president's frequent and favorite retreat, located in Warm Springs, Georgia.
â—¦The 3-cent Roosevelt stamp "White House" features a picturesque image of the White House in the background.
â—¦The 5-cent Roosevelt stamp "Four Freedoms" shows a globe inscribed with his famous four freedoms: "Freedom of Speech and Religion, from Want and Fear."

One 2014 Coin and Chronicles Set â€" Franklin D. Roosevelt booklet including images from FDR's life and presidency.

The obverse (heads) design of the Presidential $1 Coin features an image of Franklin D. Roosevelt with the inscriptions "FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT, IN GOD WE TRUST," "32nd PRESIDENT" and "1933-1945."

The reverse (tails) design of the Presidential $1 coin depicts a striking rendition of the Statue of Liberty.

This coin designs feature large, dramatic artwork, as well as edgeâ€"incused inscriptions of the year of minting or issuance, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the mint mark. "IN GOD WE TRUST" appears on the face of the coin.

I was expecting a lot more dimes in this set, and certainly not expecting it to be clad. With the Lincoln set having four cents composed of the original composition, I guess I was expecting something similar. A four dime set similar to the Kennedy 50th set where there were four dimes in different finishes would have been a nice touch...and for pete's sake...make them silver (original composition). The whole medals portion of this is totally lost on me, and in particular bronze medals. As for the stamps...well...that is for another forum...but they use language like these are actual original issue stamps from right after his death. I am assuming these are reissues and not originals. Anyone else have any differing opinion?

I was expecting the packaging to be like the Theodore Roosevelt set. It appears this set reverts to the cheap folder style of the Marshall and Franklin sets.

Yes, the dime should be silver at the least. A 'W' mint mark, enhanced uncirculated, or both would be a nice touch.

Four different dimes might be asking too much, given that the only actual coin in the Theodore Roosevelt set is the dollar. Remember, this is a C&C set. The Half Dollar set was something completely different. I still expect a Kennedy C&C set to come out with his dollar next year (although I am more excited and hopeful to get one for Eisenhower).

Regardless, I will still probably get this set. I really like the silver presidential medal in the Theodore set. I am sure this one will be just as nice.

I was thinking that there would be more dimes, not because of the Kennedy set, but because of how the Lincoln set was done. Does anyone know in fact if the stamps are reissues or did they drum up a bunch of old stamps for this offering?

Not based on anything concrete, I'd say the stamps are likely originals given the sheer number printed back in 1945 and 1946.

Hyde Park 128,140,000
Little White House 67,255,000
White House 133,870,000
Four Freedoms 76,455,400

Maybe, but we also have the Theodore Roosevelt C&C as a more recent comparison, especially since both Roosevelt sets each have one silver medal and one bronze medal.

The reason we have four cents in the Lincoln C&C is convenience, because there were four different reverses that year. The four bronze cents are somewhat equivalent to the one bronze medal the Roosevelt sets have.

While having four different types of (silver) proof dimes would be a nice touch for this set, it would significantly change its cost.

In one way, a Clad Proof Dime is totally appropriate for this Set.
Think about it...

Agreed that a Silver 2014-W Proof would have made this Set a lot more interesting....

I am going to wait for some better pictures before deciding to buy the set or not. I really liked the Teddy R C&C set, but this one doesn't sound as nice.

I still don't understand why they are issuing this set. Or at least why they are issuing it this year. Next year would be the 70th anniversary of his death, or 2016 for the 70th anniversary of the release of the dime. This year is the 0th anniversary of the dollar coin, the 69th anniversary of his death and the 68th anniversary of the dime. None of which a valid or significant reason for issuing a special set.

Perhaps I am thinking a bit too hard.

The same reason the Theodore set came out last year. It is the year of their Presidential dollar. No other reason.

I would expect some crazy dimes to come out in 2016 for 70th anniversary of the Roosevelt dime being issued, maybe we'll finally see another w mint dime or perhaps even a massive ten ounce silver "coin" with a face value of 10 cents to commemorate it.

Most likely a silver dime set and a gold dime for 2016.

jbuck, FDR's Executive Order 6102 of April 1933 and the subsequent Gold Reserve Act of January 1934 eventually led to the demise of (circulation-issue) silver coinage as well, through inflation. Once spot silver surpassed $1.38/oz., the melt value of 90% silver coinage exceeded its face value. Therefore, the orders of FDR began the inevitable path to our present Cu-Ni Clad circulating coins.

To be fair, most other nations in the world had abandoned the direct-coinage/redeemable certificate Gold Standard before the U.S. did, and Nixon was the President who really ended the Gold Standard, in 1971.

My understanding from speaking with a Mint rep months ago is that the driver behind these sets is the silver version of the Presidential medal. The other pieces included round out the offering, but it is the silver medal that is supposed to be the draw. The medals of the Presidents series have never before been available in silver.
