I also recommend people to stack silver rounds from Sunshine Mint, which now has anti-counterfeit seal on the reverse. Nice security feature, and same low premiums as other private mint. Sunshine Mint is the silver blank supplier for U.S. mint; material quality must be identical to ASE.

I am late to this party, but after reading 4 pages I have to say the differ of opinions is very educational and informative.
I am both numismatic and silver stacker and I agree to a point with the OP and others as well. I stack silver and soon some gold is only because of a hedge against inflation. Stacking silver for me is just so I can have some form of financial help in a time of need, not the End of the World scenario.
One other thing, IMO if you need to liquidate some silver from your stash I can see the 90% & the 1oz Monetary Silver Coinage going first and preferred over these bars & rounds.

Silver coins are easily recognized and that is a good reason for stacking them. In bad times they can be easily converted to currency (for PM values not just face) and are in smaller amounts than an ounce. Also, if times ever come to that having the 10% or more other metal makes the silver stronger thus less wearing than .999. Some people still search coin rolls for silver as well, thus getting silver for face value of the coins.

Lots of opinion and talk about premium over spot, no real good math here though. You can't look at purchase premium only, you need to evaluate premium on both ends. A good estimate of selling price is needed to properly analyze which form of silver or gold is the best investment between the two. Honestly you should compare that to investing in US$ as well or whatever your local currency is too as that is the same as not purchasing either material and holding your cash. Too many types of coins for me to do the math for you, but here is a dealer buy sheet with their buy prices. I use this in my estimates as well as ebay sold prices. Now I have posted this link and links in general before, but I am special, my grade school teachers all told me so. . . . http://www.upstatecoins.com/v/dealer.pdfMaybe after lunch I will walk through the math on junk silver vs generics.

I know that I'm definitely not an expert on probably anything here, but here are the reasons I personally like "junk silver". -Unlikely to be counterfeited. If the silver rounds are gotten from a trustworthy source, that's fine. But if I buy silver on the street or a "stranger" I can be almost confident that any 90% silver coins are genuine while the 6 generic 1oz silver rounds that I bought from a cards and coins shop I honestly have no idea if they are genuine or fake. (And now I fear they may be the latter ) -History. I can get old coins for almost their melt value. I can be a coin collector AND a silver "investor"/ stacker at the same time, two for one . -They're coins. I would like to think of myself as a amateur coin collector. So I like to collect coins. They also have any benefits that come with coins, like rare dates, errors, different dates or mint marks to look through/for and finding better quality ones. So to bullet point my personal reasons: -Unlikely to be counterfeited -Historical AND silver -They're coinsJust to note, though, that I don't dislike silver rounds or bars, In fact I just got 10 ASE a few days ago. I just personally like 90% coins a little more. I also find if fun to look through my junk silver to see what I can find (like older or higher quality).

What about the sunshine rounds and bars that have the neat mintmark si or whatever its called? I'm sure somebody could figure out how to do it, but it's not something that can be done by hand

@BP, That's what I recommended too; sunshine rounds with mintmark si.
However, people still believe 90% silver is harder to fake ... go figure. I guess we really need to have some members who worked at mint facility to share some thoughts on counterfeit difficulties.

We are not sating it is impossible to fake 90% silver. We are saying it is easier to spot fakes by sight, rather than weighing and doing acid and magnet tests. Plus, you think everyone is going to have one of those cards? And if you have one, is someone going to trust that yours is legit, it is not a matter of logic in a dire situation. People don't always believe in things.

There isn't an easy way to test silver now; however, since silver price is so low; it is pretty hard to purchase a fake from most dealers. If Silver becomes highly sought, the most recognized form might be the first victim of counterfeiters. It is just a risk/reward consideration. That's why there are many fake numis on ebay, too. So for now, I don't see any edge on 90% silver, at all. Other than the "history" hype or numis value sales pitch.

Why limit it to 90% silver. I've picked up plenty of foreign silver (.835, .720, .640, .300, even .100) at 5 or 6 for a dollar. Got a 1962 peso for 20 cents today. Have picked up a Swiss 5 franc for the same price. Hard to beat.

You still fail to see what 90% has to offer? Wow. We have explained it already.

I don't know if I can post a youtube link, but this is why I think junk silver will be more or less useless in the even of the dollar collapse. most people don't understand pm values http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSqA1dRgfbA

Quote: I don't know if I can post a youtube link, but this is why I think junk silver will be more or less useless in the even of the dollar collapse. most people don't understand pm values I understand that only two to three percent of the population own silver, so, silver wouldn't be of much use to most people either way.
